Article: on wired.com today

Quote with funniest thing ever said about us in bold:

Games That Last Almost as Long as the Wars They Depict
Opinions differ as to whether wargamers are a subcategory of board gamers, or whether they’re an example of convergent geek evolution.

Wargamers strive to capture the actual experience of commanding a real, historical army while wearing a T-shirt printed in 1982. Their games often take place on tables of a size rarely seen outside of clandestine meetings of evil societies, and involve perhaps hundreds of little squares of cardboard. If you feel that most games don’t have detailed-enough rules for clearing jammed antitank rifles, then this is the category for you.

Really made me laugh.

Good stuff! I like this one:

"Like any good geek hobby, board games give you an excellent chance to feel superior to the unwashed masses without actually having to wash."

I was disappointed that they had nothing funny to say about Eurogamers. Not only our games sound boring, obviously we are also...

There must have been a moment at the beginning, where we could have said no. Somehow we missed it. Well, we'll know better next time.

Well "Mulchers of Mesopotamia" did get me to chuckle. And from outside the hobby, I think just the themes themselves would be pretty amusing.

My sister in law has a Phd in Romanian subsistence farming since the fall of communism and its impact on butterfly populations and even she thought it absurd I had a game on subsistence farming (Agricola)

It's a lie. My 1982 "Vive L'Empereur" T-shirt fell apart, so now I wear a 2005 "Seven Samurai" T-shirt.

Have you considered copy/pasting this into the 'what is a wargamer' thread?

Some one should rewrite that Wikipedia article on wargaming - rather weak and completely misses the second golden age of wargaming.

oh hey! I'm also GREAT at 'degeneratizations', like which "Euros" do you get to "kiss ass" in those? More accurately, and of a shorter LIST, then which 'ones' don't YOU? How about any other with the likes of: "Middle Management Suckups"? What about some being TOTALLY unrelated to what it were supposed to 'be' about as denoted with its NAME? Too many on THAT for really wanting to be wasting time & energy on listing such for this.

Poll
1. Is your table big enough to host clandestine meetings of evil societies?
Yes.
No.
Depend on whether I puts the leaf in.
2. Do you own a T-shirt from 1982?
Yes, I wearing it right now.
Yes, but it doesn't fit anymore.
No.
3. How do you feel about hundreds of little squares of cardboard?
Ecstatic.
Inspired.
Happy.
Take it or leave it.
Sounds messy.
4. How important is proper antitank rifle cleaning and maintenance?
It could save your life.
Very.
Do you know how many steps it takes to clear a jammed antitank rifle.
I could go either way on this.
Not very.
5. Should we charter the wargame forum as an evil society?
Yes.
No.
Yes; but we need to develop an evil laugh (it's about standards after all), secret handshake and buy matching jumpsuits first.
