I have searched for a thread that already addresses this topic, but I couldn't find one. I likely used the wrong combination of words in the search engine. Oh well, I tried.

I have recently been looking at the games people are willing to trade. My collection is small, so I have nothing to trade really (except for Panzer Leader and Rise and Decline of the Third Reich - yay, shameless self-plug here).

I'm wondering if there is an unspoken rule about offering to buy someone's trade? The other point I should mention is, in cases where I actually had something the other person wanted, I would attempt a trade first before offering to buy it.

What say you, fellow BGGers? Are trades only trades and should never be sullied with currency?

I dont think theres any harm in asking, you never know that geek may need some extra cash that week. The worse they can say is no.

can't speak for anyone but myself, but I have sold a game up for trade. I was offered an amount that pretty much equaled the price of the game I would have traded for. It's all the same to me. 1 in, 1 out.

Thanks for all the quick responses!

I'll just make offers then. I figured a trade or buying wouldn't be that much different, but one never knows.

My favorite 18xx game for six players is two games of 1846 with three players each.

I don't see any objection. If any of the games on their "Want in Trade" lists are still in print, you could also offer to buy a new game and have it shipped to their address in exchange for them shipping you the game you want---this would preserve the idea of a trade if they are squeamish about straight-out selling you the game.

I think this is perfectly acceptable, I have had this work out on occasion as the asker/buyer and as the trader/seller.

The only thing is to preserve the fact that a portion of purchases goes to BGG.

The owner would need to put the game in the marketplace.

I usually offer cash for trade if the game is worth it to me. I send a geekmail giving a short url to my trade list and then state that I am also willing to send Paypal.

Anything on my trade list is up for sale. Typically the only reason it is not in the marketplace is just that I haven't taken the time to do it.

Personally, I'd just ask if they'd be interested and how much they might want. I could see where someone might be a little annoyed if you say "Hey, I'd give you $x to that game" because it doesn't really take into account their feelings or interest on the matter. So, just be courteous and you'll be fine.

At one point when there was a bug with this, I bought a game from a BGG user and what we did was donate the equivalent amount to BGG. It's better just to do it through the marketplace, but if technical difficulties arise, there's that option too.

Ditto. I have had this happen more from people who stumble on to BGG when looking for a game but I would welcome such offers from within.

I actually feel just the opposite way. If you come to me with cash for a game I don't have listed for sale, come with an offer. I don't particularly want cash for the game or else it would be in the Marketplace already. Usually people seeking high-value games on my trade list expect me to name my price, presumably so they don't "overpay". Several people have been extremely resistant when I tell them to make the first offer. But hey... I didn't really want to sell in the first place. You want the game, make me an interesting offer. Don't waste my time hemming and hawing trying to save yourself a few bucks when I wasn't looking for the money in the first place.

I would just like people to have the courtesy to say "yes" or "no" to trade offers. They could at least have the time & manners to respond.

Personally I have no problem with people offering to buy any of my trades for cash. I guess it all depends on the individual but I seriously doubt you would offend anyone by asking to buy one of their for trade games. Unless of course you offered them something ridiculously lowball for it.
