I have the German version of the base game. Does anyone know if the Mayfair expansion fits properly (i.e. in terms of size of cards and identicality of back) with the Kosmos base game?

Probably. My Dutch 999 edition fits with the German Kosmos one.

It fits perfectly. I have both, and other than the very slight discontinuity of two languages, everything is a match

BTW, World Without End is also a beautiful game, now out in English.

It does, we have exactly that combination. No problems whatsoever.
Only difference: the new wood cubes are a brighter shade of brown. But, meh, there will be beech and oak in the forest, I reckon...

The new wood cubes don't match my English edition either.
