The rulebook says "remove a corruption token BELONGING TO ANOTHER PLAYER" so we ruled that the Warp Stone couldn't be removed.

I think our interpretation was correct.

You played correctly, corruption is NOT warpstone.

Sorry for the delay. But as Pierro confirmed, a Warpstone is not a corruption token it just adds corruption to a region.
