I don't know if anyone is familiar with the text game Dwarf Fortress, but I'm curious if there are any games with a similar theme/feel. It is a mix of Civilization and Dungeon Keeper wherein you build a fortress for your dwarves and then defend and grow it.

Don't know if Dungeon Lords fits the bill? Not particularly economic/civ-ish, but certainly handles the siege aspect.

I love Dwarf Fortress too, and have had a few ideas about trying to convert it to a semi-cooperative board game.

Get a decent quad core, play in smaller areas, DON'T TURN THE ENTIRE FIELD INTO A LAVA MOUNTAIN TRAP (sorry...) and you're fine, it really only needs a fast CPU and little else...

On the other hand, I wish the game was easier to control than emacs or VI, and wouldn't come with a warning label that reads "will cause eye cancer"...

On topic: I doubt that any board game could ever hope to replicate either the faux physics engine, the motivations/interactions of the dwarfs or the dungeon building aspect, and without all that there really isn't anything left, you might enjoy Magic Realm for complexity and flexibility alone, but it doesn't really share many similarities with DFII...

(I'm assuming here you're talking about DFII as opposed to the older DF)

Board games are good at a lot of things, but something that would even come close to dwarfort isn't one of them.

Just similar in theme, but you may want to take a look at Stronghold. One player works to defend the Dwarven fortress from invading Orcs.

Only gameplay-wise it shares absolutely nothing, not a single shred, not the slightest inkling, not even the most far fetched similarity, with DFII.

Other than that, it's practically the same game.

What part of "just similar in theme" you didn't understand? And the OP asked for games with a similar theme or feel ("or" is what the bar stands for).

Duuuurh, you know, me stooopid, me no understand simple words. -.-

But if you want to ride on the "theme or feel" wave, I'd like to point that even the themes of those 2 games have absolutely nothing beyond the word "dwarf" in common.

What/where is Dwarf Fortress II?
I find no mention of a Dwarf Fortress II on the Bay12 pages.

The previous game was Slaves to Arnok: God of Blood but bears little resemblance to DF.

Is there a version I'm missing?! zombie

Thanks all!

Actually it is not DFII, it is Slaves to Armok: God of Blood Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress. That's the official title of the game.

The big problem with looking for something that gives the feel of Dwarf Fortress in a boardgame is the sheer depth of interaction and consequence that is so much of what makes DF so special. I mean, just the comments from this forum thread alone highlight the incredible complexity that has been coded into the game.

You would need pages upon pages of insanely detailed charts listing all the outcomes for every possible interaction in the game for just about every component of the game.

I'll tell you what, i think this is some rich boardgaming territory and you should develop the game for this niche.

I've played DF a while back. I built a fortress that's 'big enough' and autonomous. I was never attacked by enemies, though. Did I not play long enough?
