It's a fricken-cold 5 degrees outside, yet my neighbor just rang my doorbell to gift me with this:

Hot, fresh, and it smells heavenly!!! kiss

I'm not worthy! zombie

But I'm gonna eat it anyway!

That's bread, then, not some large pupa or cocoon? If it's warm, that may indicate imminent eclosion.

Don't believe it. Whether rice, potatoes, corn or wheat, carbohydrates have been sustaining humans since...well, since there were humans.

Enjoy your bread!

I'm not jealous:

Give a man some bread and he'll eat for a day.

Teach a man to bake:

and he'll never be jealous.

OMG it was delicious! I asked her what the occasion was, and she said she got a bread making book for Christmas and was experimenting with new recipes that were turning out pretty well, and wanted to thank me for snowblowing her driveway over Christmas. I told her she can throw her experiments my way any time!!! That bread was awesome!!!

Another neighbor brought over some orange-cranberry jam, and was all apologetic because it was slightly runny. OMG, again it was delicious!!! I love my neighborhood!!!

Anyone else want to make me something?

It's fun, it's healthy, it's good exercise. The kids will just love it. And we put a little sand inside to make the experience more pleasant.

I like my recipe too.

Makes good french toast.

Although I always feel weird cutting it.

wow. How depressing. I just spent 6+ hours (last night and this afternoon) bombing 2 bread recipes in my bread maker. Being a glutton for punishment I'll be buying more ingredients tomorrow to repeat the process (albeit with a new/different recipe).

What timing on this thread...

That's like saying Sugar is good for you because we've always had apples.

Until the agricultural revolution, rice, potatoes, corn were nothing like the modern equivalents, and a much smaller percentage of calories. Mainly people ate meat, nuts, rarely fruit. Some vegetables. Not much carbs.

And apples, until a few hundred years ago, were much less sweet than the modern variety.

People have been eating carbs for a long time (just like sugars), but the dosage makes the poison, you know.

I'm still totally jealous.

I highly recommend the Leahy method for no-knead bread. I have had great success, turning out fantastic loaves. He has a book out now called My Bread that expands on his original formula. Fun stuff!
