So my wife made her first "speciality" cake. It was a "suitcase cake" for a couple that is moving to Australia -- I thought it turned out awesome. Everything is 100% edible and designed by her.

Fantastic! At first I was thinking "Why would anyone put a cake inside a suitcase?". Then I realized that the suitcase IS the cake. Great job!

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. We didn't get to taste this cake, but generally, the cake's are very moist as the fondant serves to lock in both moisture and flavor. Underneath the fondant, there is a thick layer of homemade buttercream (basically, spreadable deliciousness). All reports from the party was that it tasted great. The cake itself is 9 separate cakes, in three layers -- so there are three cakes on each layer -- and designed to feed about 210 people (there were 12 slices left over). This is the beginning of what appears to become a business venture for my wife (this was her first cake), and I have told her that the battle of my waistline is about to begin. All the real butter and cream is an Achilles' heel for me -- and she is an excellent baker.

As more cool cakes come up, I will post them here. There is rumor that she may be doing a university building for a Dean's retirement party.

The couple is moving to Sydney -- if you look closely, the luggage tag centered at the front of the suitcase is actually a drawing of the Opera House.

You can, if you like it. However, it is really like eating a semi-hard marshmallow (neither I nor her particularly care for it -- some people love it, though). That is why she puts the buttercream underneath, so people can peel the fondant off like a wrapper and then get a regular
cake. She also puts the buttercream between each layer of cake (if the customer wanted different fillings, she would put those in instead of buttercream -- that is just the default).
