Ok, am sure this is probably a pretty straight forward one - just had our 1st game of BSG last night, and wanted a bit of clarification on setting up the Cylon Attack crisis cards...

Question: are all the ships pictured in the diagram added on in addition to whatever is currently on the board?

...am assuming the answer is Yes... however, are there any rules around running out of pieces e.g. needing to draw a 3rd basestar etc...?

Thanks!

Yes, you place these as NEW ships in addition to anything else out there. No rules refernce the card says "place" which implies new pieces.

The rules state that you are limited by the components you have. If you should ever need to place ships and don't have enough, then the Current Player decides which of the ships are placed where and what remains "empty."

page 28 of the rules:
Quote:
Component Limitations
Whenever a deck of cards runs out, the current player
shuffles the appropriate discard pile to form a new deck. This
includes Skill Cards, Quorum Cards, Crisis Cards, Super Crisis
Cards, and Destination Cards.

Tokens and plastic ships are limited to the quantity provided,
and can run out during the game. The current player always
decides the order in which a component type is placed, and if
there are not enough, he decides which ones are not placed.

Example: A Cylon attack Crisis Card is drawn that requires
two basestars to be placed on the game board. There is
already one basestar on the game board, so there is only one
more that can be placed. The current player decides which of
the two basestars listed on the Cylon attack card to place on
the game board.

If all vipers are already in play and a player wishes to activate
the “Hangar Deck” location, he may choose to move a viper
from any space area to the “Reserves” so that he may pilot it.

All the ships added are in addition to those already on the board. If there are not enough ships in stock then the current player decides which of the new ships shown are placed.

Yes, the ships are added in addition to what's already on the board.

The ships provided with the game place a hard limit on the number of ships that can be in play. If you have Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game – Pegasus Expansion with the two new plastic basestars, you are still limited to 2 basestars on the board at one time.

Also, almost every Cylon attack card lists Cylon ships that are activated. Unless the card explicitly says otherwise, these ships are activated before the new ships are added. Our group played that rule wrong for a little while.

Edit: It looks like two others beat me to it while I was drafting my reply .
