Hi,

Reading the various advice on boards, it seems currently the best to get would be a Synco one. However, in England it seems cumbersome to get hold of, and it would be a lot easier to get e.g. a Karum board or from this manufacturer:

http://www.toogoods-games.co.uk/carrom-boards.htm

http://www.toogoods-games.co.uk/index.htm

Does anyone have experience with these, or does the specification given seem comparable to Synco boards? The website also says there's no need to powder the board, which (being someone with zero experience of this game) sounds very attractive from a maintenance point of view.

Many thanks in advance for replies.

Some things to look for in a Carrom board:

1) Thickness of playing surface and underside support (it helps the board remain flat)

2) Thickness of frame (thicker frame = better/more rebounds)

(This is my Surco board)

3) Rounded inside corners

Thin boards which use no powder are not original Carrom boards and playability on these suffers a lot.

How to test a board: If you hit the striker hard at a 45 degree angle towards one side of the board, on a good board it will rebound 4-6 times. Boards allowing 1-2 rebounds are no fun at all to play!

It is also important to get a good striker. If you want a good board i recommend a Surco board (although they are not very cheap).

Hi, and many thanks for your quick reply. When I get a chance, I shall visit the shop with the oiled boards and test the rebound as you decribe. Unfortunately I don't know any place to try a good "original board" that uses powder, so I won't be that much wiser.

Despite reading the various threads, it is confusing with some people saying the Surco boards are currently not good/ warped, and one should try to get a Synco board, whereas others like yourself recommend them. Then there are the different models.

Anyway, it's a start in researching the board options, and the game does look fun from clips I've seen on YouTube.

I'm not sure what you took from my review of my Surco Tournament board, so I want to make sure this is clear: I have no functional complaints with my board. It performs extremely well. My complaints had to do with aesthetic issues.

Billiboard.com may be useful to you for comparing the Surco, Synco, and Precise brands.

Thanks for your input.

The negative comments on Surco I took onboard were not in your review, but in some more recent threads, so probably relate to recently produced boards (June 09 and later).

This could even be resolved by now, so having looked at the specs on Billiboard, I would be keen to get the Surco Champion. It was helpful to see the details on approx. no. of rebounds and also the weight of the different boards. I had not realised they were that heavy...

You can also order a board from France:

http://www.carrom-online.com/categorie-carroms-officiels-8.h...

I can recommend the BULLDOG board as is a very good board (although it is the most expensive).

I ordered my carrom board from carrom online.
I heard that the boards from carrom online are from Synco.
