[EDIT] I've updated this after play-testing.

Here's an idea for Breakthrough to provide it more variety; add obstacle terrain. Since the board is 8x8 and the outer two rows for each player is occupied at start, that leaves a 4x8 section near the center.

Placement
Terrain can be represented by a token of some other color, and each player receives 3 to place within that 4x8 area. Placement begins with White and alternating until all terrain obstacle tokens are put into position, one per unoccupied square. A player may announce "Pass" and forgo placement, but if both player pass back-to-back all remaining obstacles are discarded and the game commences normally.

Blocking
Terrain obstacles block entry; no piece may enter the same square as an obstacle.

New Actions
On a player's turn he may perform two new actions; Displace Obstacle or Jump.

Displace Obstacle.
If one of a player's pieces is touching an obstacle orthogonally or diagonally he may, instead of his normal action, displace that one space to any other open square also touching the same piece.

Jump.
A player's piece may jump across an one or more consecutive obstacles in a straight or diagonal line it touches so long as the destination square is empty.

Move After Capture Rule
A piece performing a capture must move into the captured piece's square.

Stalemate Rule
No action may reset the immediately previous action.
