I have become so hooked on math trades that I have decided to try my hand at running my own. Never being one to take the easy path, I've decided to run a week long trade every week through February.

Important Times and Dates:
Monday, February 1, 2010 1600 GMT/1000 CST : Item Submission Opens
Saturday, February 6, 2010 1600 GMT/1000 CST : Item Submission Closes/Want Submission Opens
Monday, February 8, 2010 1600 GMT/1000 CST : Want Submission Closes/Results Posted

Unusual Rules:
1. Board Games, RPGs, and related items only. No GeekGold, No Gift Certificates, and No Random Items.
2. Shipper pays all shipping. You can limit your shipping to a minimum of your home country or open it up further if you want, but be extremely specific, because you are on the hook for the full price.

Quick Links:
Trade List: The Man, The Myth, The Moustache Math Trade - Part 1 The Man
Request List: The Man, The Myth, The Moustache Math Trade - Part 1 The Man - Request List
Discussion Thread: The Man, The Myth, The Moustache Math Trade - Part 1 The Man - Discussion Thread

Full Rules:
1) Use of OLWLG is required.

2) Only Board Games, RPGs, and related Items are allowed.

3) Non-game entries must be added as "Outside the Scope of BGG" (game id 23953), "Miscellaneous Game Accessory" (game id 5985) or "Miscellaneous Game Merchandise" (game id 22104) and must include the +altname+ brief description -altname- format in the description of your item.

If you are offering an expansion for which there is no entry in BGG (for instance expansion cards handed out at Essen) and NOT the base game, please use "Miscellaneous Game Accessory" to help avoid confusion.

4) You are expected to describe, as accurately as is reasonably possible, the condition (components and box), language and edition of your item in the description.

For games not brand new (in shrink) you must inventory the game's components and list anything missing. Do not assume it's complete. Also, remember that just because something is "new in shrink" that doesn't mean that you shouldn't disclose any dings. It might not matter to you, but it matters to some people.

If the game and/or expansion you are listing is a "Print & Play" make that clear in the description (and I recommend you give specifics what it was printed on, mounted on, etc).

If you are listing an expansion if you reference the base game in the description be clear one way or the other if you are including the base game or not. Do not include a link to the base game unless you are including it as this looks, in the OLWLG, as if you are.

5) Sweeteners are to be listed using the GAMEID formatting (prefered, example Hansa). If you don't use this format your sweeteners won't show up in the OLWLG properly.

6) If you've been reported as a bad trader, you cannot participate. If you try to, I will remove your entries. If you see someone posting entries who is a bad trader, please let me know.

7) Please do NOT include links to other games in your entry unless you are actually including them as a sweetener, as this is displayed in a misleading manner by the OLWLG.

8) You must be extremely explicit in where you will ship to, because you are required to pay all shipping. At a minimum you must be willing to ship anywhere in your own country. You may broaden where you will ship to neighboring countries, continents or whatever you like, but you will be paying to send it there.

9) Finally - you are expected to periodically check during the item submission period, and preferably during the want list submission period, to see if anyone has commented on your entries. People often ask questions of items - most commonly because you have forgotten to state a version, language or shipping policy - and you should check in to address such questions in a timely manner should they arise, so that everyone then has the correct information available.

This is a very easy thing to do. Just click on "My Geek", then "Contributions" and finally on "GeekList Items". You will then be able to see your items without having to find them in the trade GeekList along with any comments that people have made. You will only need to go back to the trade GeekList to make adjustments or answer questions if there were any.

Trade Settings:

Num trades = 117 of 1122 items (10.4%)
Total cost = 117 (avg 1.00)
Num groups = 4
Group sizes = 56 42 14 5
Sum squares = 5121
Elapsed time = 224918ms

Seems very low to me.

Sounds interesting, I'm curious to see how the trades play out with many of the items likely rolling over week-to-week. Any particular reason why you've decided to exclude GeekGold & Gift Certificates?

I would appreciate being able to add those.

I anticipate a lot of people saying "U.S. shipping only."

That being said, I am looking forward to another trade -- thanks for doing this!

Mostly because I wanted to be different. Next week's will allow them in some capacity.

so, why exactly are you requiring the shipper to pay full price? that means we probably won't see many big-box items.

You may see a lot of big items, but I see people being very selective on their want lists. I may put up my copy of War of the Ring, but I'm not letting it go easy. Still, doesn't hurt to put it up, right?

And thanks for running this!

2010 can be the "MT Noob Year" - I've run a couple of tiny local ones, maybe I can run one later this year too.

Actually, in most past math trades I've seen, most people don't change their shipping policy on big items, unless it is really big or heavy. People who want to list such things still can and just figure their shipping costs into how they value other items.

In rule (5), Hansa is not appearing in GAMEID format?

Should be Hansa?

Often they just copy and paste from other people so that's been wrong for a while now.

That alone ruins it for me. Might as well just say USA only because I can't see people wanting to ship internationally. Reconsider that for your next trade if you want more people to participate in them.

Happy to be proven wrong (in fact I want to be proven wrong), but until I am I won't be adding items.

I know it's tough on international traders, but thanks for these two rules. I hate weeding out all the "I'll pay the first $X", because I always pay shipping on all my items. I try to include some lighter items in each math trade which I'll ship anywhere, or at least to Canada, but I never want to mess with paying someone else for shipping. It's a trade. Both parties pay shipping in a trade, to my mind, and should figure that into their trade valuations.

I agree completely. As an international trader, I much prefer these simplified rules, even if there may be fewer items to trade. It makes valuations much easier.

Which is kind of the point. I left a number of items off my lists last trade, because people weren't even covering all of domestic shipping, and i just didn't want to work out how to value things. This way everyone is on the same footing.

EDIT: I know it's not going to be the most popular choice, but I stand by it.

Um, you might want to check what Jeff says about forced shipping policies in the OWL. He won't support the use of the OWL for them.

Unless you've already cleared this with him of course.

You are permitted to be as restrictive as you wish with shipping. You simply must cover the full cost. From what I read, this doesn't trigger Jeff's alarm.

True, my mistake. But I suspect this will hurt the Canadians more than anyone else.

Agreed. It won't directly harm me, since I usually avoid entries which request money anyway. It will indirectly harm me by having fewer items in the math trade, but so be it. I enjoy having one free of gift certificates and such for a change.
