There are many games now with a large number of expansions, but for those of us with limited money, space, time or indulgence by their S.O. it is essential to know which expansions will see a lot of use and which will languish gathering dust.

I have used a standard set of terms for scoring the expansions. These terms may not be applicable for some expansions so here are some alternatives:

Base Game is incomplete without it / Essential / Fixes the base game
Would always want to include this / Great / Adds a lot
Adds a little / Okay / Nice to have
A waste of money / Poor / Inconsequential
Actively harmful / Bad / Breaks the game

Reading around it seems that Call to Arms is the expansion not to miss.

Poll
Rate those that you know well

Creatures

Dwarven Battalion Specialist Pack
Earth Elemental

For Troll and Country
Goblin Marauders Specialist Pack
Goblin Skirmishers Specialist Pack
Heroes Expansion
Hill Giant
Scottish Wars

There is a geeklist which covers a lot of games in a similar way:

I participated in this poll and answered as best as I felt my responses fit to the choices, but I don't know how helpful my contribution is without some additional explanation (though I don't know that the contribution is helpful with the additional explanation either ).

I answered "Would Always Want to Include This" to all of the expansions, not because I would want to use each and every expansion in each and every game of BL played (though it is possible to include them all, and would be fun ), rather because I do feel that each expansion does add value to the game (yes, even the Troll & Country expansion ).

One of the main reasons I decided to jump into BL was the potential for variety I saw in the game. Though misteps in rolling the game out have been numerous, in my opinion, the game has pretty much unfolded as I had hoped. Currently all I am waiting for is Race/Nation/Factions specific Call to Arms deployment decks and new races/nations/factions. As is the game is rich and has kept me playing regularly (one to a dozen games a week) for over three years now.

Perhaps a separate poll of perceived value of each expansion would be good in conjunction with the current poll? For example, I would rank Call to Arms above Troll & Country and about even with Epic. I would probably differ from most in that I would rank all of the figure expansions above both Epic and Call to Arms, as it is the unit differences that drive the action in this game and that is what I value most - I do enjoy Call to Arms, but prefer the challenges posed in the set scenarios.

So far there's a few "no surprises" and a few surprises for me. It's no surprise that the majority feel that the base game is incomplete without Call to Arms - I completely agree with that as it speeds up setup. As well, since Troll and Country foolishly shipped without an info card and is completely biased towards Epic play, I'm not surprised most feel it's a 'waste of money'.What I'm surprised about is that the majority feel the 2 Goblin expansions only 'add a little', since I personally feel they're an unplayable race without at least 1 of them - I voted that I'd always want to include them. Of course there's lots of ways to play without using Goblins, so maybe those expansions aren't important to many here.

I would be interested in hearing the opinions of those who voted for "waste of money" or "actively harmful" for any of the expansions.

Voted Waste of Money for Creatures and Dragons. More expensive then any of the DoW expansions and not nearly as many figures. I even picked up For Troll and Country and found the price reasonable for what I got.
