I'm sort of the IT guy for our office, but we only have 5 people and thus, not much opportunity to improve my knowledge. And my knowledge of Windows networking is almost zip.

We have a simple shared folder on the server (Win 2003 Server), and I need to make some subfolders within it private to only specific users. I can add those users, but when I try to remove the "everybody" group it gives me a message something like it can't be removed because it inherits its permissions from it's parent. I'm afraid to touch anything else for fear of screwing it up.

How do I do this?

Go to Advanced. Uncheck Inheritance. Click OK to copy permissions.

Then you can remove Everyone and change whatever else you need changed.

Sweet! It works! Thanks!

I now need to sit down and read a book on this thing so I know what I'm doing.

I have some old Microsoft binders on Active Directory that I can send you if you like and would like the cover the cost of shipping.

Just FYI:
This was about NTFS file permissions, not Active Directory.

AD would be about the containers that you group your domain into, the forest structure, and the group policies that you tie to the containers.

i.e. not something you would want to do with a 5-person office.
