Since 2000, the Producer's Guild of America's pick for Best Picture and the Oscar for Best Picture went to the same movie 6 out of 9 times. This year's PGA winner? The Hurt Locker.

For the record, District 9 doesn't have a chance in hell. It's nominated because they have 10 Best Picture noms this year instead of the usual 5. The race is going to go down to either Avatar or The Hurt Locker. Up In the Air could be a darkhorse, but "the little indie that could" usually goes home with a best screenplay Oscar instead (see Little Miss Sunshine, Sideways, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).

Up in the Air has a softball final third that substantially undermines its chances.

Avatar has a solid chance of winning despite the fact that it shouldn't even be on this list.

I suspect the Hurt Locker would be the safest bet.

If the people that decide who wins looked at it as a retelling of South Africa's apartheid and not a Sci Fi movie, I think it would stand a chance.

Probably. But I think the marketing machine will make Avatar win, same as Titanic (that is even crappier than Avatar). District 9 is the best on that list, but I agree with with Erak, it is a serious contender for screenplay, but it has a very strong contender in Precious. I don't know.

What Should Win: The Hurt Locker
What Will Win: The Hurt Locker

Oscar will get this one right. Avatar should be up for cinematography, editing, sound and a whole slew of technical awards but not for best picture.

See as Erak said about movies that get the Screenplay, I think the hurt locker won't win the movie of the year, but screenplay for Mark Boal as a new screenwriter. That is my prediction.

When did they start nominating 10 movies? I thought it was always 5 like most of the other categories.

Well, first year in awhile at least. The last time there were 10 Best Pic nominees was in 1943 (ceremony held 1944).

While I personally think (and hope) The Hurt Locker wins Best Picture, the Best Screenplay category is pretty tight. I think it could just as easily go to Inglourious Basterds.

I'm surprised no one has chosen "The Blind Side"... I could easily see this one walking away with it. But they'll probably just grace Sandra Bullock with Actress of the year. They'll think she's due.

When green is all there is to be, it could make you wonder why. But why wonder? I'm green, and it'll do fine: it's beautiful, and I think it's what I want to be.

This is crazy. The reason cited for the Oscar Snub was that Sony pictures refused to release the screener to the Academy because quote:

We're concerned about piracy. The thing about Moon is that its particular genre is very predisposed toward being uploaded onto the web. We really just wanted to protect that aspect of it. It's as simple as that.

Idjuts. Moon has been released on the internet for several months already.

Nerdrage alert. (See my avatar, not Avatar.) I thought Moon was certainly best picture material in a year with 10 nominees and Sam Rockwell deserves a win for the role.

Agreed!

Moon, hands down, was the Best Picture of 2009 and Sam Rockwell blew all other male contenders for Best Actor out of the water.

I really liked Hurt Locker and District 9, and agree with their nominations, but the lack of Moon for any category has finally killed the last spark of interest I had in the Academy Awards. shake
