Am I the only one to think that this map of our galaxy is boardgame waiting to be designed? Time to let the imagination run wild!

Darn those Europeans and their extensive transit systems. Now America will never catch up to them.

Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of something like Orion. This game features Bussard Ramjets for spacecraft and the density of matter in a space region affects how the spaceships move.

Using the whole galaxy as a map introduces a huge scale though (the aforementioned game takes place within a single nebula). It remains to be seen whether it would be really a shorter trip to travel in the galactic arms (as the map designer suggests) or cut across the vacuum (at the expense of mass for thrust) by taking a shortcut across the arms.

Space Trains.

Following a "track" of matter laid down across the voids so they can take the shortcuts without sacrificing speed.
