This isn't a review, but I wanted to sound off why I like this game so much!

I've now played it three times, two solo and one with a mate. I like it because it has the following ingredients that do it for me:

-a good theme (Stalingrad..come on!)
-good quality components (colourful, evocative cards, actual WW2 photos, clear symbols,
-comprehensive rules (although they're a bit jumbled about and counter-intuitive until you find your way around)
-excitement (the Break die rolls!)
-rewards good play, punishes bad play, most of the time..

and for me.. the X factor which makes this (and Warrior Knights) the best two games around for me...

-the game mechanics. It's fun just doing the things you need to do each game turn.

I agree Colin,

got this game as a birthday present. We tried it out last friday, and we had a blast of an evening.

Thumbs up to Steven Cunliffe for designing such a winner !!

We don't stop playing when we get old, but we get old when we stop playing.

Who won Filip?

Have you tried the different way of scoring set out in one of the links from the main page.. I like that becuase it's not just win or lose..

Once I've played a few more games, I might post my scores here.

Colin & Filip,

I am thrilled you enjoyed the game! The Hell of Stalingrad is definitely a unique system and it is great to hear from gamers who appreciates it a different take on the traditional wargame!

I am hard at work on the sequel right now and I hope you like the upcoming Fires of Midway!

I think I will!

But I do still hanker after another WW2 slug-fest using the WisH Stalingrad model.. maybe Omaha Beach, Battle of the Bulge, Arnhem...

Well no battle is quite like Stalingrad, it was THE brutal slug-fight of the war.

The next game after Midway will be Rommel's Rage, which will include ALL the North Africa battles and a six player Tunisia game.

One thing that is missing from a lot of board games is actual FUN! That's why so many are "bored games". HoS makes the actual activity of playing the game enjoyable, so you might say it puts the "fun of playing" back into gaming.

I've probably played it a hundred times, but I still enjoy it!
