Hello All,

In anticipation of our upcoming gaming weekend I wanted to check in with the BGG brain trust about something. We have added another attendee to our midst, giving us six.

We will be doing three types of games, Video games, role-playing, and finally a bunch of board games. Telling you this just so you know that the participants have quite a variety of interests.

What would you say are your top 2 or 3 six player games?

Obviously I can sort the rankings by the game mechanic, but that doesn't really cover everyone's favorites and there might be some diamonds in the rough out there.

Editing for the following:
Games we have enjoyed in the past-
Twilight Imperium
Puerto Rico
Ninja Burger
Frag
Shadows Over Camelot
Pandemic
LongShot
Formula D
Cash n Guns
Zombies!!!

Battlestar Galactica is brilliant with 6, probably my best recommendation. The design of the game requires a lot of participation, even when it isn't your turn, and makes you pay close attention to the actions of others.

Arkham Horror is also great with a multitude of people. Power Grid is pretty good, too. If you get the expansions, Race For The Galaxy is great.

Beyond these, there are a few good 'party' games out there. Wits and Wagers comes to mind.

As mentioned below, Acquire is great, too.

Not sure if you want heavy games, light games or something in between. Here are a few of the games I like best with 6 players...

On the lighter side (some of these, like Catch Phrase, require the right group of people)
Long Shot
Saboteur
Unnamed Object
For Sale
Ca$h 'n Gun$
Winner's Circle
Liar's Dice
Tsuro
Ave Caesar
Fearsome Floors
Wits & Wagers
Catch Phrase!

On the medium and heavier side
Bohnanza
Medici
RoboRally
Shadows over Camelot
Power Grid
Bridge Troll (the lightest of these, but there are a lot of rules)

I recommend:
* Bohnanza
* Citadels
* The Great Dalmutti (sp?)
* Seafarers of Catan with the 5-6 expansion. Use one of the preset boards found on the Geek and it can be balanced.

Enjoy!

Don't worry at all about having more, I just wanted 2 or 3 minimum, These are all great suggestions! I have plenty of time to plan ahead and purchase those I don't already have!

Thanks!

6 players is the most common number in my group. Usually it allows for one big game and end of the night filler. Our favorites are:

Heavier/Lengthy
Imperial - one of my personal favorites I rate a 10. With 6 it is very competitive and interactive.
Battlestar Galactica - I'll second this one.
Railways of the World - I enjoy this as well as Steam, but with 6 this is more likely to be played.
Mare Nostrum w/Mythology Expansion - Not hugely popular here, but I enjoy it most with 6. I don't usually bring it out with less than 5.
Power Grid - always a winner for us.

Lighter/Shorter
Liar's Dice (Perudo) - always gets played at the end of the night.
Saboteur
Poison

Good 6 player games are hard to find, the most important reason, I feel, being the terrible downtime for that many players in most games. Add to that the fact that amongst six people there's bound to be one, or two, that suffer from AP and, believe me, this is a brew you don't want to try.

However there is a game that I would never consider playing with LESS than six: RoboRally. I'm not sure if you are familiar with this game so a brief introduction: RoboRally is a programming game designed by R. Garfield (of MtG). Programming as in you use cards to tell your robot where to go (it's a race for robots btw, but I would the title gave that away), and everybody has a set amount of time to pick out the cards they would like to use. So essentially the 'think-about-your-move' stage of the game occurs for all the players simultaneously and lasts for a set duration. Then the cards are played out on the board and absolute chaos ensues.

An additional advantage for your gaming weekend is that the key concepts behind the game are easlity understood, especially by ppl who play computer - console games (at least that was my experience).

Another programming game which my group finds amusing and enjoyable is Fearsome Floors. The theme and the mechanics differ from RoboRally this is also an excellent game, where you run around a dungeon trying to avoid the monster.

I would also consider played Formula D, which I see you own. This is also a very nice game for a lot of ppl, but I think you know that already. You may also want to check out Elfenland, a spiel des jahres winner with substantially less luck than formula d.

You may want to have a go at smth co-op. Avoid Arkham, it is fiddly as f___, it needs most people to know the 20page rules and plays long. Don't get me wrong, this is, for me, the top FFG title, but I prefer to play it with two and two detectives each. I would, however, recommend Red November, an excellent game with a really interesting 'time element' which should play well with six (I've played it up to five with no problem), does not suffer from the usual Pandemic 'I'm the leader' problem, is pretty chaotic but a ton of fun, without outwelcoming its stay at smth close to one, one and a half hours.

All of my recommendations should go well with bear and pretzels.

PS: There is a new game called Ugg-Tect. Check it out, although I have never played it, it seems to be a lot of fun and currently in the top spot of my 'party-games-to-buy' list.

I speculate that Lord of the Rings with the Lord of the Rings: Sauron expansion would be great with 6 players, but I haven't managed to get it to the table myself.

Railways of the World or Railroad Tycoon
A Touch of Evil: The Supernatural Game
Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game
Medium games
Fearsome Floors
The Adventurers: The Temple of Chac

This last game is in the old style roll and move, but oh so much more!

I would strongly second the recommendation earlier for Bootleggers. Very interactive, thematic and great with 6.

Another 6-player gem not mentioned yet that is unfortunately out of print is WildLife.

Happy gaming.

addendum:

I realized I didn't follow the instructions. My top 3 games for 6 are:

Twilight Imperium (Third Edition)
A Game of Thrones (first edition)
Power Grid

OK, done now.

I definitely agree that Citadels is one of the better 6+ player games that I've tried. Although it's a card game (which technically Citadels is, too), Solitaire Frenzy is a fantastic speed game and the more people the better, you just have to be sure everyone has their own different-back deck of regular playing cards to play. I have never tried Carcassonne with 6 but I adore the game itself and find it's easy to explain and learn. Pretty much everyone I know loves Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game and it's always recommended for large groups so that's probably a safe bet, too. Hope you find some gems in there!

Not yet mentioned:

Senji
Shadow Hunters
Galactic Emperor
Age of Empires III: The Age of Discovery with an additional set spray painted
Chinatown can be played with six, see my post in the general forum
Category 5
Witch's Brew with the six player expansion Alea
Shark
Pow Wow
Imperial 2030.

A number of Amigo card games which probably haven't heard of such as Sticheln, Byzanz, Ziegen Kriegen, Pinguin-Party and Nur die Ziege zählt

I'e never played Conquest of the Empire but it goes up to 6 players.

I am not a fan of Bootleggers. The game is either not very balanced or well playested.

I should also add The Pillars of the Earth with the expansion.

I think Shadow Hunters and Age of Empires III are my top two six player games.
