Only my wife and I to work though this.

Possible as a two player? Is there a specific rule variant for two players?

I've played CotE1 2-player and it works. Not tried CotE2.

CotE-1 is possible with two players.
CotE-2 is a different story. Sure it can be played with two, but its really more of a multiplayer game with 4+ players. So far, our best games have been with 5 players (that odd player makes alliances distinctive), but we have had some great 4 and 6 player games too.
