Pennsylvanian Holly Crawford has been charged with animal cruelty after piercing three kittens up to 10 times with a 14-gauge needle, and attempting to sell them online.

Allegedly, she thought it was 'neat'.

Full article is here.

Ha! Cats never fail to amuse!

I wonder if docking dogs ears and tail is also cruelty?

What about circumcision?

Who cares? It's just a fucking cat.

Okay, okay... hold your outrage. Just because I'm not a cat lover doesn't mean I think it's okay to abuse cats. I'm not sure this counts as abuse though. They appear to be well-fed and loved and you have to admit, the dangling metal bits from the ears look nice. I also agree that if this kooky goth chick is going to be charged with abuse then every tail docker, ear clipper and dew-claw remover needs to be dragged into court also.

Such bullshit.

Well maybe, but this chick really didn't know what she was doing:

Quote:
The piercings at the back of their necks and base of tails hampered balance and jumping, local media quoted her as saying.
'They were maimed and disfigured,' she said, adding that if infections had become severe, the three-month-old kittens could have died.
Dr Merck said piercing the kittens' necks produced a feeling of submission that would linger with the silver metal jewellery.

Mother cats pick up their young from the scruff of the neck, she said, because pressure on the sensitive nerves there leads to submissive action.
'No matter what they tried, they could not escape from this,' she said. 'It would make them feel as if they were constantly being bitten.'

EDIT: On top of that I've never really understood the desire to "modify" your pets to begin with.

I can understand spaying and neutering, but chopping off random bits for aesthetic purposes, or removing most of a cat's paws so they don't make holes in the furniture seems really unnecessary.

More unnecessary than raising them to eat, or forcing them to live in your house and eat chicken lips and pig anuses twice a day? OK, that's probably an upgrade, but the bottom line is that you are forcing them to live totally contrary to their natural state. Forcing them to grow old, grow blind, suffer through arthritis for YOUR enjoyment. The whole thing can be classified as abuse (and often is by the likes of PETA and friends).

Edit: Or forcing them to wear humiliating clothing (even by the standards of a species that overtly lick their bungholes).

So then do you agree with PETA?

I think there is a middle ground between PETA's level of crazy and the "fuck it, animals are just property" school of thought.

My opinion is that domesticated animals like house cats and dogs have pretty much developed a symbiotic relationship with humans anyway, and without human beings to depend on, these domesticated animals live short shitty lives.

But if we are going to enjoy the love and friendship of these animals, we should at least extend the courtesy of not treating them like a piece of wood we can cut up to make a lovely looking piece of furniture out of.

No, I don't agree with PETA. I think to arrest/charge this girl is totally inconsistent with NOT arresting any parents that have their toddlers ears pierced (which I have seen many, many times in my little anecdotal view of the world). I don't think it's a big deal, unless it can be proven that she was intentionally causing those pets pain for the sake of causing them pain.

I have no idea what this map is all about. But, the colors are nice.

What is an "Animal Legal Defense Fund"?

Is it run by animal lawyers? Or animal community activists? Do they defend animals accused of capital crimes? Do they legislate for animal rights? Who gives money to this kind of silly shit? And more importantly... how do I get a job with them?

Yeah, the colors are very beautiful!

As I get it, it's an organisation that provides legal support to the "animal side" in court cases about animal abuse. I stumbled on the map when trying to find some kind of country comparision about animal protection laws for some discussion where someone claimed that animals are better treated in Europe than elsewhere (which I'm not too sure of. I'm sure laws are better here, but not the implementation of them.)

This map had the header "Best 5 states to abuse animals", and those are, according to ALDF, those with white check marks on them. So I couldn't resist posting it after your initial sentence, although it's quite obvious you didn't mean it.

I'm not sure it's nicer to be an animal in Sweden than in Idaho though. In one investigation, 95 out of 100 examined pig farmers broke the animal protection laws. Most pigs lived under conditions we'd label torture if they were humans. Wounded, apathetic, scared or rabid pigs trampling each other, feeding on rotten carcasses of their friends, after chewing off each others' tails. The animal protection agency was closed down in 2007. It's still legal to have sex with animals unless someone can prove they suffer from it. This makes Sweden a hotspot for animal porn producers. There you have something to rub in the face of the next naive pacifist cowardish liberal hans blix pussy boy that comes and complains about your manly ways : p

Well Harald... to be fair... I do live in a rural area. Animals are often raised here for meat and that means they are not always seen as friendly, furry people.

I'm prone to empathy for animals that are being actually abused, and that extends beyond the family pet sort of animals. One of the recent effects of the economic downturn out here in Idaho is that many horses are being abused. By abuse I mean: not being properly fed and cared for. My area is heavily horse-oriented and probably 95% of the horse owners didn't understand that they are expensive and somewhat delicate animals to feed and take care of. So as personal incomes suffer we tend to see a lot more skinny, limping horses than I'm comfortable with.

Cats and dogs are another thing that is annoying out here. Since there are no "laws" regarding how many you can own and no licensing, etc. So the roads tend to be littered with cat corpses and the hedges and copses of brush filled with feral cats. Add to that the huge populations of porcupines, skunks, raccoons, badgers, foxes and coyotes and the country roads here look more like an animal charnel house than most city-folks are comfortable with.

I look forward to the day when the Animal Legal Defense Fund starts bringing criminal charges against rural residents who prefer to run over skunks rather than drive head on into trees in order to avoid them.

Sorry to hear about the pig fucking epidemic over there.

Yes, but that's legal in so many countries now, so that part of the adult entertainment business was lost to low-wage countries long time ago
So I've got no use for Dora anymore. You can have her for a geekgold. I've washed her.

We cut their ears, bob their tails, barcode tattoo them and cut their balls off but this article is upsetting? Personally, I am against all of the above AND the piercings. I just don't see the logic in her doing this being a crime when breeders are modifying their offerings. Not to mention how we treat our livestock...

What of tattooed pigs?

That pig was drunk in Hamburg, I can see that.

I'm against all that as well. While "natural" is not an argument that gets to me considering what a cruel place nature can be, there's still nothing natural with meat industry the way it looks like to 95%. Plain disgraceful. But cutting balls? Our cat is 7 months now, and in the cats' home, they say he'll be a happier cat if we cut them off, plus that we'll get less urine inside and that he doesn't risk making more homeless kittens (like he was himself) if he ever gets out. You still think we shouldn't cut them?

If you can get consent from the animal to do so then I support the decision.

You know Harald, I thought that sweet little piggy looked familiar. Apparently you were photographed with her and didn't realize that everything you post on MySpace is forever a part of all our lives.

Nice tattoos buddy... but I think you'd look better in pink lingerie.

That means no. So we should 1) live with the piss 2) place an ad on the Internet to see if someone wants him or 3) kill it

I suppose 3) is out of question if we can't cut the balls. Let's say 1) is out of question too. Remains 2) and make his new human first promise his balls won't be cut off. And if no one wants him under such conditions? What would you do?

It's time for a poll! Two questions, with two options on each, making it a nice square of four combinations.

But I have problems phrasing the questions. Pro-Life/Pro-Choice is easy. But Animal Rights? Would anyone say they're "against animal rights"? I find that hard to believe. Maybe "Vegetarian/Non-Vegetarian" would be a good proxy? But that would probably be tilted too much the other way, as I'm afraid 85% or so here are ruthless beefeaters.

Maybe manipulate the questions a bit to get a more even distribution, as in:

A: I'm inclined towards vegetarianism
B: No Real Food without red meat

making it:

I'm pro-life and inclined towards vegetarianism
I'm pro-life and think Real Food needs red meat
I'm pro-choice and inclined towards vegetarianism
I'm pro-choice and think Real Food needs red meat

But then we've perahps strayed too far from "animal rights" as some people might just be disgusted by meat indistinguishable from human flesh, or limit it because of health or just taste.

What do you think?
