I want a game where the players are in direct confrontation. I want attacks, backstabbing, conniving, grinding your defeated opponents into the dust, the kind of game that fills the air with tension.

And I also want it to not last more than an hour or so.

Hit me, BGG, with recommendations.

Condottiere - if played to its full potential and with the right people it is indeed a nasty backstabbing game and oh, so much fun. I've only played the earlier edition, not the latest FFG one, which has extra cards in it.

If you need a "friendship/relationship ender", have a look at Intrigue. This game is evil!

I've never played it but I think Cutthroat Caverns might be what you're looking for. I know I will buy it the moment any of my LFGS's gets it.

Diplomacy fits the bill for everything but time....

I actually like Mississippi Queen with Mississippi Queen: The Black Rose and the combat rules found in the Files section (http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/46217/variant-tabkes-ms-br). For some player vs player vs player action.... plus you usually get to keep your friends afterwards....

I agree with Angelo, Junta would probably be the perfect game. Our group played it in September and it was a blast. Everyone was backstabbing each other, accusing them for not helping/defending against the revolution, killing each other every now and then... It was so fun

If you play by the rules, it's probably gonna take more than an hour, so just decide to play one hour. The game is built up by identical phases where each phase takes 10-15 minutes, so you're not really developing anything. Thus it's no problem to stop earlier, you won't be losing an integral part of the game.

Cosmic Encounter is just outside of an hour. Your alliances change hands every turn as part of the game mechanic!

I'd have to agree with Markus before me: Cutthroat Caverns fits your description well.

In this game if you fall behind badly and/or don't think you'll survive much longer, you can sometimes even sabotage the other players so that everyone dies!

Something along the lines of 'Why do you keep attacking me/not killing that monster/weakening my attacks?!?' comes up every game in my experience.

I would go with BANG! or Ca$h 'n Gun$. You could also try Cosmic Encounter. All of these fit your requirements and can be tons of fun.

If you happen to give Cosmic a whirl, have a look at the 4 planet variant. I think it's in the rulebook.

I'm kind of gobsmacked nobody said...Illuminati.

I have never seen a more cutthroat game than the Cheating Variant. BTW, they're *serious* when they advise you to only play it with really good friends or people you will never see again. Regular Illuminati is pretty brutal too.

Interestingly, my experience has been that whenever you can have more than one winner, backstabbing *increases* and cooperation *decreases*. Heh.

Side note: Go 80s or go home when it comes to brutal...back in the day, Junta, Illuminati, etc. used conflict models that have largely been absent from game design since...

Ehh, Junta is 7 hour game... I wonder if you would get anywhere at all in an hour. Lifeboats, Intrigue, and Cutthroat Caverns are probably closer to that mark.
