This was inspired partially by Power Grid and partially from lordnameci's ordered monsters variant.

Do not shuffle the Thunderstone into the deck. When you have an empty space to fill, draw 3 cards off the deck. The strongest 2 go into a separate pile, while the weakest one goes into the slot. Then, when you run out of cards, shuffle the pile of 20, and do the same thing, except turn over 2 cards. Finally, shuffle the thunderstone into the remaining 10 cards and draw normally.

"Weakest" can be determined by comparing ranks of the cards (noting that each monster type seems to have 5 ranks of difficulty) if you are familiar enough with the cards. Ties can be broken by choosing the first weak card turned over as the weakest. Alternately, you could compare the total required strength as a less accurate but easier gauge of difficulty. Either way, agree to your method before flipping the cards.

ooo... I like that. Although there could be a distinct advantage to not killing early on and building up your deck first. You let others clear the trash and you clean up the boss monsters.

I think this variant would be well applied along with the house rule prohibiting purchase of higher level heroes. That way you would really want to kill weaklings in order to get a strong deck. The need to buy good village cards and the need to get experience would balance each other.
