Super Bowl XLIV: Colts Come Back and Then Survive a Late Scare! wow

This is my session report for Super Bowl XLIV between the New Orleans Saints (me) vs. the Indianapolis Colts (Thad).

So now, live from steamy Miami cool

1st Quarter:

The Saints won the coin toss and elected to receive. Drew Brees and company deciding to take the ball first so they can take it to the Colts! ninja

The Saints immediately established the running game and with a mix of runs and long passes to drive relentlessly down the field. Brees finished off the drive by connecting with Marques Colston on a 35 yard pass to draw first blood and take a 7-0 lead with 8:30 left in the 1st Quarter

Saints d10-7
Colts d10-0

The Colts took the following kick off and began their drive only to have a Peyton Manning pass tipped and picked off at the Colts 45 yard line. The pick was returned 11 yards and the Saints took control of the ball again at the 7:10 mark of the 1st Quarter.

Nearly three minutes later, Reggie Bush broke loose for an 11 yard run and the Saints extended their lead!!!! cool thumbsup

Saints d10-1 d10-4
Colts d10-0

The Colts again took the ensuing kickoff, but Peyton and Company again sputtered running only three plays before launching a 56 yard punt and the Saints take over at their own 24 yard line.

The Saints also could not move the ball well and the Saints, perhaps playing a bit too conservatively, end up punting the ball away to the Colts with :40 seconds left in the quarter. The Colts take over at their own 31 yard line. The first quarter thus ended with the score:

Saints d10-1 d10-4
Colts d10-0

2nd Quarter

The second quarter began with the first solid drive of the game by the Colts. Finally, Peyton Manning throws a strike to Reggie Wayne connecting on a 25 yard pass to put the Colts right back in the game with 9:40 left in the quarter.

Saints d10-1 d10-4
Colts d10-7

The Saints then began their next drive at their own 27 yard line but unfortunately Reggie Bush was shut down this time and the Saints were three and out. After a booming 43 yard punt, the Colts began their next drive at their 32 yard line.

Manning then began the Colts next drive with a mix of passes, coming through with a 3rd and 16. However, the drive ran out of steam and the Colts punted the ball away, hammering the ball 56 yards! wow The Saints thus began their next drive at their own 9 yard line shake with 5:00 left in the quarter.

The Saints began their drive carefully and then, getting out around their own 25, Brees then dropped back to pass. The Colts front four burst through the line and pursued Brees dropping him for a 12 yard loss! gulp shake The Saints followed this fiasco with a measly 38 yard punt and the Colts took over at the Saints 38 yard line.

The Colts take over deep in Saints territory but had only 1:50 left on the clock. Using their timeouts creatively, the Colts attempted to push the ball deeper, but the Saints secondary stepped up and held the Colts to a 36 yard field goal which they missed! shake

Saints d10-1 d10-4
Colts d10-7

Thus it appeared the first half scoring had come to a close.....or had it?????

The Saints took the following kickoff and broke a 37 yard return! cool With only 1:00 left, the Saints then boldly launched a long pass strike with Brees connecting with Colston on a 25 yard pass. The Brees pass gave the Saints a long field goal attempt of 43 yards and, as time expired, the field goal hit home and the Saints took a 17-7 half time lead!

Saints d10-1 d10-7
Colts d10-7

3rd Quarter

The Colts took the 2nd half opening kickoff beginning at their own 33. Several incomplete passes and a Manning sack later, the Colts punted driving the ball 41 yards and the Saints took over at their own 26 with 13:10 left.

The Saints did not fair any better sputtering to a 3 and out series. A 44 yard punt placed the Colts at their own 25 yard line. Peyton Manning then began a passing clinic connecting on passes of 25, 16, and 12 yards before finishing the drive off with a 16 yard TD pass to Reggie Wayne again and the Colts trimmed the lead to 3 with 6:10 left in the quarter.
Saints d10-1 d10-7
Colts d10-1 d10-4

The Saints then began a grueling drive with a mixture of Bush runs and Brees passes. On a long 3rd and 15 the Saints then called a draw and gave Bush the ball. He broke loose for a 27 yard TD run and the Saints stretched their lead back out to 10.

Saints d10-2 d10-4
Colts d10-1 d10-4

With 2:00 minutes left in the 3rd, the Colts began their next drive at their own 25 and Manning picked up right where he left off completing passes of 16, 24, and 22 yards before Joseph Addai finished off the drive with an 11 yard TD run and the Colts again trimmed the lead to 3!

Saints d10-2 d10-4
Colts d10-2 d10-1

The Saints took the ensuing kickoff and began an impressive drive before running into a brick wall called the Colts “D”. The Saints then chose to try a 45 yard field goal rather than a pooch punt. The attempt fell short leaving the score unchanged with 9:10 left in the game!

4th Quarter

Once again General Manning led his troops forward connecting again on pass after pass. Milking almost 4:00 off the clock, the Colts again hit paydirt with another Manning-Wayne connection on a 22 yard pass. With the PAT, the Colts, for the first time, took the lead in Super Bowl XLIV! wow cool

Colts d10-2 d10-8
Saints d10-2 d10-4

The Saints took the ball and started on their own 30 yard line. The Saints drove relentlessly onward and then faced a 4th and 10 at the Colts 29. Rather than try a field goal and then try to hold the Colts deep, the Saints went for it and fell 3 yard short!!!! gulp cry shake angry
Thus, the game appeared to be over, but the Saints still had three time outs, but the Colts took over at their own 22.

On first down, the Colts ran the ball for no gain and the Saints took their first time out. On 2nd down, Manning fired off a 15 yard completion and the game seemed over! Then Manning fired off another pass which was picked off at the Colt 48! wow After an 8 yard return, the Saints found themselves down by 4 with 1st and 10 at the Colt 40 with 1:00 remaining and 2 time outs!

On the first play, Drew Brees fired off a 19 yard laser. After the completion, the Saints called time out. On the next play, Brees fired again and connected for 15 yards and the ball now rested on the Colt 6 yard line! wow cool With one time out left, the Saints decided to gamble with a draw to Reggie Bush, but Bush was smacked at the line and lost 4 yards! shake With their last time out taken, the Saints attempted one last pass play. Brees dropped back, looked, rolled, fired and............. INCOMPLETE!!!!! wow

Thus ended Super Bowl XLIV with a Colt victory. Despite the two turnovers, the Colts still were able to overcome their 14-0 deficit and held the Saints to a single TD in the second half. Manning’s drives mixed his short and long passes well, and coach Thad’s play calling hammered my defense in the second half. Still, if the real Super Bowl is this exciting, that would be cool

Final Score of Super Bowl XLIV:

Colts d10-2 d10-8
Saints d10-2 d10-4

Based on this rousing game of Pizza Box Football, I am going to go lay an unnecessarily large bet on the Saints to cover the +5.5 point spread. It seems as good a tool to use as any.

Well, the game is over. I went 0-3 this year on the conference championships and the Super Bowl. shake I guess I can make a career out of being the opposite man when it comes to making predictions: whatever I predict, just pick the opposite way!
