So if there are no available buildings at your build level when it is your turn to build, the rules say that you may choose a building from the next build level up. Does this mean the single next level up, or does in mean the first available level that has buildings left?

For example:
A player has 0 industry giving them a build level of 1, and all the level 1 and 2 buildings have been taken. Do they simply not get to build, or may they select from the level 3 buildings?

You must build every turn. There are 15 level 1 buildings and 12 level 2 buildings. If there are actually no level 1 or 2 buildings left, you can build a level 3, but I can't imagine it happening.

"Dude, you're getting a Market".

Yeah, can't ever see this happening either.

There are 15 level 1 buildings.

In a game with 5 players, this is not possible to happen until the 4th round of the game. It will only happen if every player takes a level 1 building in every round.

If someone can only build level 1 buildings at the end of the game, they're doing something horribly wrong.

While hypothetically possible, this is something that isn't remotely likely to be encountered in a game.

Especially impossible because somehow the other 4 players got all the workshops and then started grabbing more shipyards and markets in lieu of guildhalls.

Ok, so if it isn't obvious, I haven't played the game yet. Thanks for the responses. I'll file this under the "theoretically possible but will never happen" edge case category.

necroposting, but just reading the statement:

this isn't "there are no buildings available for you to build", it's "no buildings *at* your build level"

so if you're at level 3 and all nine level 3s are gone... congrats! free level 4 upgrade.

so instead of sticking you with crappier buildings and guaranteeing your loss, it gives you a free bump to keep you competitive.

Except that that is not the rule. If you are at level 3 and all level 1, level 2, and level 3 buildings have been taken, you are permitted to take a level 4 building.

Dave's right. The rule is:
Quote:
Players may only choose a building if it is from a Build Level equal to or lower than their current Build Level. (If no such building remains, players may choose a building that is from the next Build Level up.)
