I have a friend that is an avid chess player. We also used to play RTS computa games too.

I'm looking for suggestions for boardgames to introduce him to boardgaming.

I'd like to NOT use strictly abstract games though, as I usually find them boring.

I was thinking of something like Ghost Stories where there is a dynamic puzzle to figure out - that might appeal to the avid chess player. Also I am considering Pandemic and possibly Space Alert and Robo Rally.

Thoughts on these suggestions? Any other suggestions?

Thanks for taking the time.

Assuming he likes chess due to the long-term strategy you could easily try a worker placement game such as...

Agricola or Stone Age

Or maybe...

Dungeon Twister - The board can turn and change with variable character abilities.

Arkadia - Kinda like a puzzle, it's definetly a thinker.

Good luck though, I'm sure there will be many more recommendations from others to come.

Both my recommendations were already posted. So... add a +1 for Hive and Dungeon Twister. Hive has about the same amount of theme as Chess, I personally think.

You might want to look at Piecepack and Treehouse games. I'm a bit fascinated by them now, as systems.

Not Hive. Definitely not hive. Too simple for an avid chess player, I would think. However, both suggestions for Dungeon Twister and Mr. Jack are good ones.

Then there's Khet: The Laser Game, or the entire GIPF series, but you said you didn't want abstracts...

Hmm, how about Small World?

I'm going to make a recommendation based on the SPIRIT of the game, rather than having similar mechanics.

If the goal is a game that inspires deep thought, pondering multiple layers of strategy and possibilities, a game that inspires conversation and running commentaries like this one (great reading, BTW)...

The Annotated Game (Part 1)

... then my recommendation is Tigris & Euphrates

My suggestion is to find out what themes interest him. If he's an avid chess player, he probably isn't interested in being shown something "better", and you should respect that. But if you can offer something that interests him thematically, it might draw him in.

As chess is an abstract wargame I would recommend Manoeuvre. Sure it is a wargame but very much chesslike and IMO a good introduction to wargaming.

I second Dungeon Twister. I find that there are similarities to chess, but it's much more thematic. A real brain burner.

Well, the most obvious two abstracts are Shogi and Xiangqi. For non-abstract games, it depends on what he likes about Chess.

If he likes the deterministic combat, then perhaps Diplomacy or (so I've heard anyway) Vinci. If he likes perfect information, this makes a non-abstract game much more difficult but say Antike.

Find out what aspects of chess the person most likes and then try a game which shares that aspect.

Seconded. This was the first game that came to mind.

I've also heard Dungeon Twister being compared to chess.

Try Dungeon Twister: commonly refered to chess in a dungeon...

If it's a coop you're looking for (Pandemic, Space Alert, Ghost Stories), I can't really help you but I guess Ghost Stories might be a better choice than Pandemic (I have both but haven't tried Ghost Stories yet, it does seem more puzzley though...)
edit: for dungeon twister, you should check out the relaunch Dungeon Twister 2: Prison, I'm not sure you'll find the original anymore.

Chase - it's out of print, so you'll have to make the board yourself. The pieces are easier though. All you need are two sets of dice in different colors...

Art of War- beautiful game and well made (all wood components and board). I would consider this an excellent gateway game for a chess player transitioning to something different.
