Since I can't convince anyone I know to play this, I'm interested in finding some people to play online. As I'm a newbie to the game, I'd prefer to play Sealed Deck games of some variety rather than Constructed. I'm in Chicago (GMT-6) and am usually available in the evenings.

What website/software were you planning to use?

I've been interested in giving this a try.

I'm not so sure about the details - I was hoping that someone experienced could fill me in on what the best current solutions are. My understanding is that there's a NR gamepack that can be used with Magic Workstation and that it works passably well. But I've also caught occasional references to other programs that have been written, though I'm not sure if those made it to the stage of being fully functional.

I'm pretty sure lackeyccg.com has a Netrunner plugin.

Indeed. I'll poke around at it tonight if no one else chimes in with any pointers. I'm off to play another game at the moment.

I remember researching that site a while ago.

I also remember wading through the forums and waiting for the 'new' version of Magic Work Station.

Anyone know if MWS has advanced past 0.94?

That site looks like it facilitates cataloging a physical collection, but does not support an online play experience.

OK, I seem to have MWS basically working following the instructions here:

http://www.runners-net.com/settingupmws.html

The program seems awkward, but usable. The installation instructions basically work as written on XP. But I don't know if Vista/Win7 will like them, as MWS is sloppy with permissions and expects to be run by an administrator even though there's no good reason for it. Getting it to run as a limited user took some work.

If anyone else wants to give it a spin, I'll be available for a game sometime around 8PM Chicago time.

Meanwhile, I discovered that lackeyCCG has a netrunner plugin.

Lackey Homesite:
http://www.lackeyccg.com/

Updated plugin:
http://www.lackeyccg.com/forum/index.php?topic=104.msg317#ms...

From what I can tell, LackeyCCG is free but MWS requires payment after a month.

I'm D/Ling the plugin for Lackey now.

Lackey has a nice feature. You can 'add pack' which will let you add a basic corp/runner deck which is different each time but follows the rules of the original 'sealed decks'.

You can then edit down to your 'play deck' and go.

That does sound handy. I'm downloading it now too.

Do you prefer Corp or Runner?

No preference at all.

I've got Lackey running now and the auto-add feature is very convenient, but the results don't look right. You only get one rare on each side from a real Starter (or maybe two in the whole double box?) - Lackey consistently generates two per side. And the decks seem short on Icebreakers to me - one Runner starter I generated had only 9 breakers. Something's not right there. But in any event, I think playing with a Starter plus 3 boosters would be more interesting anyway - Starters seem to be a little short on bit-gainers. And playing Starter + 3 should give enough of a card pool that any inconsistencies in the generator don't matter too much.

Byron, have you got Skype? I'd be up for a game in another hour or so (I've got to put kids to bed in a few minutes), but I'm sure it would be easier to learn the interface with voice chat.

I'm happy to report that byronczimmer and I successfully completed a NetRunner game via Lackey. There are a few minor bugs with the program and a few less-than-intuitive interface elements, but with the first game behind me I think I could play quite smoothly now. The pack-adding function alone gives it a big step up on MWS for Sealed Deck play. And installation is smoother as well once you figure out how the plugin updater works. If anyone else is interested in a game, let me know. However, if you're new to the program, I would definitely recommend installing Skype if you don't already have it - talking through the correct button clicks is definitely much better than typing would be.

And I echo that sentiment. LackeyCCG served the purpose.

I noticed (when building my very not-awesome Runner deck) some of the bugs mentioned in the link above. I think I'll be installing the patched version in order to alleviate some of the errors.

Runner 1a deck ready to go.

Prepping my Corp 2a deck.

Hi Netrunner players,

some of the things have been mentioned but let me just shortly answer to everything that has been asked:

Currently there are the two active community pages http://www.runners-net.com (forum) and http://www.netrunneronline.com.

Three programs can be used to play Netrunner online:
Magic Workstation, http://www.magicworkstation.com
Installation instructions on runners-net.com or http://www.uni-koblenz.de/~ffko/Netrunner/ (follow item MWS)

LackeyCCG, http://www.lackeyccg.com

GCCG, http://gccg.sourceforge.net/, being a user there I can provide the installation instructions.

A lot of up to date Netrunner material (huge deck collection, links section, rules, formats etc.) is also available at http://bit.ly/9P03L9

My personal preferences are MWS and GCCG, my time zone is GMT+2 and I hang out on the Netrunner IRC chat sometimes. Have you met our Afreet there yet?

Hi,

let me use copy paste from the previous poster:

(guess who is my most frequent opponent :-)
You can also contact me by private message for a game.

Is there an easy way to generate Sealed Deck card pools for MWS or GCCG? I'm just not that interested in Constructed, at least at the moment. And Lackey's "Add Pack" function is definitely convenient here.

Why are MWS and GCCG preferred?

Can we get a breakdown of pros/cons of each interface?

Avalable Sealed generators are:

(Windows) http://www.runners-net.com/downloads/NetSeal_v1.1.zip
designed for MWS

(DOS)http://arasaka.de/content/download/programs/generator.zip
I assume that it should be straightforward to use this for gccg with minor manual modification of the output files.

(Java) http://www.darkpact.de/netrunner/programs/NRJava-0_7_tar.tar
If it works on your machine, try it. Path names in the Java code can cause problems.

I am going to describe my very personal pros/cons for each of the three
programs MWS, GCCG and LackeyCCG:

MWS

Pros
+ Most intuitive interface
+ Clear layout, small cards, plenty space
+ Self-defined chat buttons
+ Autosaving chat log
+ Direct connection with opponent is supported, stable reconnect for direct connections

Cons
- Not straightforward installation for usage with Netrunner
- The function to roll dice can be enerving and time consuming if multiple rolls are required.
- No updates in the future
- No support of proxy servers
- No watch function

GCCG

Pros
+ Absolutely reliable autosave and load again function of games when accidentally disconnecting or having a break, autosaving for each opponent separately
+ Server chat lobby
+ Multiple tables also for more than 2 players
+ Possible to watch other players' games
+ Some automatic actions linked to playing certain card types (ICE is played face down, Preps go directly to trash etc.)
+ Technical support can be asked to implement and improve software
+ Everyone can actively participate in the development
+ Plain text format for deck files

Cons
- Complex installation via SVN currently
- Interface has a learning curve
- Server-based only currently

LackeyCCG

Pros
+ Server chat lobby
+ Very small fairly chatty community that help each other out and teach each other (even if it is wrong stuff ...)
+ Buttons for indicating turns and actions

Cons
- Annoying interface even after learning
- Too small fonts in chat window, not changeable as far as I can tell after looking for it
- Not adjustable keyboard layout
- Sometimes disconnects
- No watch function

Deck building within the programs is different in all three but I cannot seem to favor one or the other in that respect. Yet, GCCG allows to just use a deck list in txt format which I find convenient.

tppy: I'll work on d/ling GCCG next.

I've had personal bad experiences with MWS (a lot of it dealing with the creators and never seeing 0.95 materialize).
