I'll post updates in this new thread as the work on the 4th Edition continues.

02/07/10 Module was updated today. I did the zones for all of the Year, Month, Production, and Alliance areas. Also redid the setup files for all the scenarios so these new areas would be used. Next up is to rework the Grand Campaign Game, which will mostly be a rules update, and to update the playing pieces. Maybe by 2011? Then the question becomes whether or not we can or should get this published.

02/05/10 Big things happening now. 4th Edition. I did work on the map to correct some things and add some other. The PDF was created for that edition and uploaded. I had put together a rough 4th Edition Rulebook back in December but only posted it today. The module has been updated with the map today but I have to update the setup files as well so I’m not rolling it out yet. Fourth Edition here we come!

Go to the VASSAL site for the updates:

*UPDATE*
Ignore this post. See below for rulebook.

4th Edition Rulebook is available now.

This edition fixes many minor errors in the 3rd Edition, fixes the Naval Rules, fixes some rules, fixes portions of the Grand Campaign Game, and updates the rulebook for the New Map.

Here is a link to the file here at BGG:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/52967/war-and-peace-un...

I'm playing a session of the Grand Campaign Game now and will continue to work on it. I have a professional game designer onboard to redo the playing pieces. Updates to be posted as I continue.

Two other major efforts will be put forth for this Edition:

1. All of the Question Box answers will be incorporated in to the rulebook in some form. Thus to know, for example, what happens to a leader in a city that is assaulted and all his forces are lost will not require sifting through all of the Question Box entries to find the answer. It will be explicitly stated in the rule. I view this as an improvement over the "official" work.

2. The extensive personal errata players have written about over the years will be addressed in some form. An example is the Deer Valley Game Kit for this. A decision will be made and the rules will explicitly state the answer. This will facilitate one way to play this game, rather than the myriad "house" solutions currently in use.

Work is progressing.

VASSAL module is updated with enhancements / corrections to the map and minor issues.

I had 'November' listed as a non-winter month. Wrong.

I have uploaded the replacement counters included in General 30-6 but am sick of dealing with the file process here at BGG so these are on ConSimWorld.

Looks like I have a publisher for these counters, the new map, and other counters for the additional scenarios. Good news. More soon.

War and Peace - Reprinted

Okay, not the same news I'd love
to post here but this is pretty dern good as well. Fellow is printing and supplying a bunch of the work I've done plus other stuff:

http://www.camelotgamestore.com/gameparts/WaP.htm

This is the same guy who is doing the Avalon Hill General project.

http://www.ahgeneral.org/index.html

Screwy web site but good enough. You can get the 4th Edition Map printed for a mere $36. Cool! He is also offering counter reprints. Nice quality graphics, plus some variant work. I'd say the variant counter sheet is a must-have for everyone. Not quite ready though. He also prematurely posted a link to the Variant map for Egypt. Not ready for prime-time.

I'll have a set of these before too long and will post some pics. Please let us all know if you get any of these and what you think. I'm not affiliated with this store in any way, just happy to see some of this stuff offered again. Plus, this is the least expensive printing of my map anyone has found. Hope the quality is there too. Should be plenty good enough, but I haven't seen the printed result yet.

Happy gaming!

The Fourth Edition Rulebook has been updated. It is possible this will be the final version of that effort - 12292010.

Go to ConsimWorld as listed in the post above, or the VASSAL web site:

I have never played War and Peace. Numerous gamers I respect have told me that the diplomatic rules are dysfunctional leading to an inevitable French win. I was wondering if this new work deals with any problems with the diplomatic portion of the game? Note, this is in regard to the original WaP up to maybe the 3rd Ed.

Look at the variants put out through the General magazine over the years and you'll find options to alter the alliance phase. Those are all available within the 3rd Edition Rulebook.

I like the less complex one plus the variant to include naval economic warfare and global naval movement.

It appears that you've really put a tremendous amount of work into my favorite game of all time (along with Third Reich).

Alas, my old, sick computer and its incompetent operator won't let me open the rules you've posted, so I will have to work on it.

I can't wait to see them, and your revised map. It sounds very cool indeed.

Very kind words.

The rulebook is in PDF format, by Adobe. You'll need the Adobe Reader to open it.

http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Once you've taken a good look at the 4th Edition you can look in to the effort put forth for the sequel. Lots of fun War and Peace for you to catch up on. Should make for a good re-entry for this fine game.

Sounds like you'll most prefer the 3rd Edition Rulebook I put together as it gathers together all of the official work.

Happy Gaming,
