Pandemic often plays as though it is a puzzle game - might want to consider that one, as it's a fine game.

Catan is the traditional new-gamers game, and importantly it has buying, selling, trading, and building concepts in it (which makes it an easy next step from monopoly).

FITS and Carcassonne would be my other suggestions for good family-friendly puzzle-like games.

Puzzle game: Ubongo! Or a variant thereof.

How many in the family?

Hit or Miss usually makes us laugh. It's best with 4 or more.

I'll go ahead and suggest my own game, Kachina, which has been described as a good puzzle/thinking game. I agree with the suggestions for Ubongo, Pandemic, and Ricochet Robots. You may also want to consider SET, Tongiaki: Journey into the Unknown, and Blokus.

As for funny games, try Apples to Apples, Time's Up!, and Ca$h 'n Gun$.
