The Dragons expansion has now arrived in UK games shops. And it's priced in a similar vein to the recent heroes expansion.

At £28. That's almost $44.

Can *anyone* justify to me how three plastic dragons and some cards and counters could possibly be worth $44? I don't believe that I've paid as much as that for any of the C&C:A expansions, and they all seem to contain a lot more in the box. Memoir '44 expansions have gone up in price to £22, but there seems to be more in each one of those too. What is more telling is that I cannot see how I could ever get $44-worth of use out of this expansion.

So - just as with the heroes expansion before - I'm passing on it. And when the creatures expansion turns up later in the year at the same price, I won't be buying that either. Battlelore *ought* to have been the ideal game for me, between the complexity of C&C:A and the abstraction of Memoir 44, but it's hard to justify simply on grounds of cost alone. Plus I actually prefer playing the other two - Memoir when something simple will do, Ancients when a proper battle is called for. Shame, really, as I had an almost childlike level of excitement about Battlelore when it was first released.

It's $35 in the states, $23 - $26 online. I'm still not sure if three figures justify even THAT cost though.

That doesn't make any sense. I could buy the expansion and ship it to the UK for $10 less than that!

Picked one up for $22 + free shipping on ebay. But I'd never pay more than that for it.

the UK price is a joke.

Any UK gamers who want to buy one, get it shipped to me here in Tx - and I'll mail it onto you for the cost of the postage.

Done this for a few people for various items and you may / may not make a significant saving.

pm me if interested.

That's steep even with a, say, 30% discount. Besides, in Europe, (AT) games rarely if ever go to those insane 80% (or higher) discounts we regularly see in US shops.

I mean, look at Heroscape, you've had the Valkyrie master set for 20$ for years now (Sometimes even 10$), if I buy it here (If I even find it), I can expect to pay more than 4 (or 8) times of that.

You'll EAT your Fantasy Flight and LIKE it! angry

Just kidding! laugh

I just purchased this expansion. I'm usually two-of-everything when it comes to BattleLore, but not in this economy. I DO have one box of the Heroes and will be getting the Creatures set, too. I kinda wish that all three had arrived in one expansion set. Maybe they could have saved a few bucks that way. Hard to say now.

I think from here forward, we'll really see what FFG is up to with this game. Very interested to see what will happen. I'm still on board, just not as intensely as in the past where my budget is concerned.

Are the plastic and printed bits made domestically or in China? If China, then that box is definately packed to the brim with screw. If domestic, still pretty pricey.

If you want to support your specialist games shops, you pretty much have to. And the discounters here in the UK don't offer huge discounts. the cheapest I've found is about £22. Still way over the odds. And there's postage on top.

Battlelore is going out and FFG tries to get as much money as possible before droping it for Westeros.

This makes me sad. I like this game a lot, but I just can't justify paying the prices for the new expansions.

Anything above $20 for this is too much. Same company I got the reaper expansion for Talisman with 5 miniatures and two stacks of cards for less than this. Not a direct apples to apples comparison, I know that, but it does illustrate that their Battlelore stuff seems to be extra pricey.

I just got this expansion for my birthday. These are some really nice sculpts so maybe that's why they cost more than other stuff from FFG? And I don't know a lot about plastic, but I think these are made of a different plastic than FFG's minis too. And... this has nothing to do with price... Battlelore uses a nice beige plastic so that even unpainted the minis look good. FFG has YET to figure this out. Sure, some of their games (RuneWars) need different colored pieces to distinquish who owns what, but what about the heroes seen in all of their Rune games - Dark grey where detail does NOT stand out. And whoever made the color choices for the Descent minis should be fired. Light beige and red just look absolutely AWFUL. Those minis scream to be painted just to protect your eyes. At least Dooms minis are not so hard to look at. Now that FFG will be REALLY taking over what comes out for Battlelore, I wonder at the future miniature quality.

Now I know why I hated so much the idea of the license transferring to FFG.

Under AoW the game was doing GREAT; quick expansion releases, nicely priced, and best support EVER (remember all those beautiful online custom scenarios, some endorsed by Mr. Borg himself and the awesome erratas and FAQs for individual Lore and Order Cards available online)...

Not to mention the "online map editor" (Just WOW!!!) and the ability to play online.

Now, new expansions take EONS and the price is just so over the top. When I read the price I had to check the box content, I was expecting a lot of plastic in there, but "NO", just a few ones (like 3) and some 9 cards... WoW!!!

I'm really debating about getting out of Battlelore alltogether, and I have to ask, has anything any game company has done, gotten cheaper without it being an outright close-out?

The reason I ask is, I could see sticking around with a "wait and see what's up" mentality, but... $25 for three figures doesn't bode well for what the future expansions are going to cost, at all.

Does the Dragons set use the same sort of plastic as the base version? IIRC, that soft slightly rubbery texture is one of the harder compounds to get, so it makes sense that it would cost more.

AND WE THINK THAT IS BLOODY ANNOYING.yuk
Gives us a feeling we're being constantly ripped off.arrrh

But..
Apparenlty another BL expansion not worth it's money...
I've now checked all the expansions and people opinios on them and it's the same every time.
This is so annoying, that we are not getting vallue for money and it's making me go rapidly of wanting to buy them.soblue

Maybe better to save the money for a new game..
Westeroes?? no doubt another one that will come with endless expansions.devil

Safari LTD Lair of the Dragons Collection 1

Picked mine up at Michael's Craft Store for $8

$10 at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Safari-LTD-Lair-Dragons-Collection/dp/...

Downloaded the rules from FFG. Printed my own cards and markers.

Total cost...< $10 and I have 3 more dragons if I want to make rules for them for a special scenario.

whistle

Now, both Safari LTD and Michael's made reasonable profits from these sales...enough to keep the bricks and mortar store going and the manufacturer cranking out the toys. So, what is the possible justification for the prices being charged for this expansion?
