I don’t’ know if this has been mentioned yet but I think the time has come. With the rise of deckbuiding games, I believe the core mechanic should be recognized with its own category under the mechanics section.

An interesting suggestion, but how would you distinguish it from Card Drafting? Perhaps you could post your descriptions of each.

At the risk of sounding trite, deck building involves building a deck - something you draw from, discard, and shuffle when you are done. Card drafting does not necessarily involve this.

+1

Drafting is choosing a card from an available selection. Drafting can be a mechanic used for deck building, but the two are separate things. Ticket to Ride has card drafting, but does not have deck building. Dominion uses drafting as a way to build a deck.

Chris' definition of "deck" is headed in the right direction, but needs a bit of polish. Let me think about it...

I couldn't have said it better myself but let me expand on this argument. Yes, it is true that in both instances the manipulation of the deck is key but how it is done is the defining factor.

Case in point: area movement vs. point to point movement. In both cases things are being moved but the significant difference of how is what defines the two categories.

Now, back to the original question. The act of removing or adding cards from some outside source to a deck is not drafting them even though the cards may be drafted later.
