The Board Game Designers Forum's monthly Game Design Showdown has been posted. It works like this:

The 1st or 2nd Thursday of each month a challenge is posted. The challenge suggests a theme or limits components, mechanisms, or otherwise imposes design constraints.

Participants (open to everyone!) have 1 week to design a game which meets all the requirements of the challenge. It's not necessary to build prototypes and playtest these games, rather it's a design exercise - just write out your game idea and flesh it out as much or as little as you'd like. There is a word limit however, so do get to the point!

After the submission window closes, the entries will be posted anonymously, and the public will vote on which game they think sounds the best. You're free to vote however you like, but for the most part a lot of weight is placed on following the challenge guidelines (if the challenge requires that roll-and-move be a main mechanism, and your game eschews dice for an action point allowance system, don't expect a lot of votes).

After 1 week of voting, the results are totaled, the designers
of each game made public, and the winner(s) announced. At that point a thread opens up to discuss the games, and there have been cases where a GDS entry has become a full fledged game, won a game contest, and is currently being considered for publication by a European publisher!

The February installment of the Game Design Showdown has been posted - come on by and check it out!

The March installment of the Game Design Showdown entitled "Back to work, Slacker!" has been posted - come on by and check it out!

This month's challenge requires a very specific Worker Placement mechanism, multi-use components, and has the bonus theme of "Alternate History." I'm dieing to see how creative people will get with the worker placement restriction!

The April installment of the Game Design Showdown entitled "The REAL Risk Game" has been posted - come on by and check it out!

This month's challenge revolves around this image of various hazard icons. You can use the entire image as a board, or sets of icons as tiles, or individual icons on cards or anything you want, as long as the game is somehow focused on the icons and hazards depicted by them.

Can you design a game with a theme of danger, accidents, pain or any similar concept suggested by the icons? Feel free to elaborate any way you like. Humor, educational, realistic, whatever works.

I was a little late in posting this message on BGG, so time is short! If you PM the administrator of this months GDS, they might be willing to extend the submission window for you.

Guidelines and specifics for entering the Game Design Showdown can be found here.

Seth is taking a break this month, and put me in charge of the August 2010 Game Design Showdown, entitled "Sharing."

This month's contest involves some very intriguing, and probably relatively unique, mechanical restrictions, but the most prevalent of them is the requirement that the game have two winners, and exactly two winners.

Guidelines for the GDS can be found here.

Good luck!

The January 2011 installment of the Game Design Showdown at The Board Game Designers Forum has been posted - come on by and check it out!

This month's Showdown entitled "Remember the Time" challenges you to make a game with a memory element - not something the players have to remember, but rather the GAME should remember something! Also, a Rock-Paper-Scissors type comparison must be used in a non-trivial way.

Guidelines and specifics for entering the Game Design Showdown can be found here. Send submissions to sedjtroll at BGDF though the personal message system there.

The February installment of the Game Design Showdown at The Board Game Designers Forum has been posted - come on by and check it out!

This month we have a special treat! Michael Mindes of Tasty Minstrel Games has expressed an interest in finding a quick, light, filler-type of dice game, and this month the GDS encourage you to create a game that would meet his criteria. The deadline is extended as well, and I hope that through this contest and the critiques afterward someone will put together a game good enough that Michael will choose to publish it!

Guidelines and specifics for entering the Game Design Showdown can be found here.

Entries for the Feb GDS have been posted - all 38 of them!

Because there are so many entries, this month you get 30 votes to throw around - but no more than 10 to any one game.

VOTING FORMAT CHANGE:
We're doing a 2-step process instead. Step 1, simply send me a list of your top ten of the 38 entries. PM this list to sedjtroll via BGDF's PM system, or else email sedjtroll at Yahoo.com with your top ten list. They need not be in any particular order. Do this by Sunday, 3/13.

PLEASE PUT THE FOLLOWING IN THE SUBJECT LINE:
FEB GDS TOP 10

Come check out the dice games and cast your votes at www.bgdf.com!

Wow. Many (most?) of the entries require 30-40 dice or more (49 for one). Few require less than a dozen. I thought the dice game I designed a while back was pushing the limits of reasonableness with 19.

Based on a quick read through all of them, it looked like there were a few potentially-quite-good games in there.

The Board Game Designers Forum's monthly Game Design Showdown has been posted. We're on a new schedule (except this month, which is late due to summer travels):

The 1st of each month a challenge is posted.

The July 2011 installment of the Game Design Showdown has been posted - can you redesign a classic with current Eurogame technology? Come on by and check it out!
