The licensee of Preußische Ostbahn has asked me if Americans can handle the name Preußische Ostbahn or if we should have a new name.

I replied that just Ostbahn would be OK. What do you all say?

Please vote for

Preußische Ostbahn

or just

Ostbahn

or suggest an entirely new name.

If you are the first to suggest a new name that we end up using, you will win a free copy of the new licensed game!

I think Ostbahn would work great as many Americans would have trouble with the ess-tsett. My idea for an original idea would be: Prussian Railways.

I think, especially if it's Queen, that Berlin Express would be appropriate.

Old Prussian called itself Prūsiskan (Prūsa)

Prussian State Railways: Prūsiskan Staatseisenbahnen

At any rate, the American consumer would likely at have a shot at pronouncing:

Prūsiskan Ostbahn or Prūsiskan Staatseisenbahnen before they every could figure out Preußische.

I like the original name of Preußische Ostbahn, but Berlin Express is also good.

I really like the name Preußische Ostbahn but I don't think it's a good "general" name. I'm not sure Ostbahn is either. I liked the suggestion of Berlin Express as it avoids the whole "Prussia? What's that?" issue many people (Americans, at least) will have.

Prussian Railways is a good name - unless say the licensee is say - Queen or another European company. I have no idea if that would annoy the European market that the company English-ized the name of the game that is set in their neck of the world.

For mass English distribution, the KISS approach for a title is usually best --

I agree that Preussische doesn't work well for an American audience, and Ostbahn alone doesn't say much to me.

I'd avoid "Rails" because that conjures up something in the crayon rails family of games.

I think Berlin Expres is good.

I'll also suggest Nord Express -- after the Paris - St. Petersburg train that traveled for much of its distance over the Ostbahn's tracks between Berlin and Konigsberg.

Preußische Ostbahn is an excellent name, except every now and then I press ctrl-S instead of alt-S and end up with forum messages cut in half (ctrl-s sends, alt-s makes the ß).

However, I don't think it's a good name for a mass market game outside Germany.

I'd go for a bit more flavour: Prussian Eastern Railway.

Or maybe:
German Rails - From Prussia to Berlin
Tracks to Berlin - Birth of German Railways

How about "The Game Where You Do Trainy Things Where Kant Lived, and thus Is Awesome Because Kant Is Awesome". It really rolls off the tongue.

I think Berlin Express. It's accessible, and not off-putting. Even the whole concept of Prussia almost implies a war game or history that might be a turnoff.

Berlin Express
(ties it in with the other commercial game in the line)

Prussia Express.
(Prussia keeps it closer to the area, but the other game was a city)

Die Ostbahn
(bit different).

Ostbahn Express

Using "Express" would start establishing a line with the same style of gameplay, with CE being the first.

Personally I like the exotic flavor of Preußische Ostbahn, and hate name translations. In particular, renaming
Perry Rhodan: Die Kosmische Hanse as Perry Rhodan The Company House was about as bland as it could get.

However unfortunately I agree that whatever my personal preferences you're going to need to do this for the American market to aid sales. Not having a particularly creative burst of ideas, I'd vote for Berlin Express or Prussian Express. Using the Express helps tie it in with Chicago Express and may eventually help build brand or series recognition. Of course there will be completist nuts out there that that will need to collect every one of the Express series. whistle

Stay away from 'Rails'. It gives the impression that it's going to be a crayon or Mayfair style game.

If it's creative marketing you desire...

Berlin Wall Railway Race!

Forget that wall isn't really a wall. And that it encircles Berlin. And that it's not set during the Cold War. The sexiness trumps all of that.

Well, since John is the one selling the licenses, I would presume he would want to keep Queen happy. My guess is that FRED is publishing this, but that's just a hunch.
