I had written previously on maxing out all categories for a three player game, a two player game and a solo game:

After resting our fatigued brains for a week, we progressed (naturally) to try it out on the four player game. We had half expected it to be much tougher than the three player game, but it did not turn out to be so.

Pardon me whilst I repeat the essentials again. The objective of this exercise is to find a selection of cards and route towards maxing out all scoring categories (including fenced stables, renovating to stone house and maximum family size) for a 4 player game. The final score is of secondary importance. We do try to maximise the score where possible, but the primary goal is to achieve maximum score in all categories. The occupation, minor improvement cards, round action cards are also selected and are not random. The decks used are the E, I, K, O and Z decks.

We discovered the potential of the Opinion Leader towards the end of the 3 player game attempt and played it right from the beginning in our 4 player game attempt. This proved to be a masterstroke and made the rest of the planning a smoother affair.

The concern over the number of animals was also assuaged by the presence of some animal related 4+ occupations. We did not have too much trouble in that department in the end. (Squeezing out 24 cattles from 5 on the action spaces may sound a little far-fetched, but if you follow our strategy above, it really isn't that difficult.)

Lastly, we not only ran out of resource tokens and animeeples in the latter rounds, we also ran out of the stone house/field pieces!

We will definitely be making an attempt on the 5 player game, but before that, the Chinese New Year celebrations beckons (tomorrow).

祝大家虎年身體健康,萬事如意!
(Wishing everyone a healthy and successful Tiger Year!)

I love perusing exercises like this, since they can be instructive, but I do have a question. I note that in Round Two, all four players seem to put out an Occupation. How is that possible? Am I missing something here? I'm guessing it has something to do with this Opinion Leader, which I know nothing about. Guess I better go read up on it...

edit: Aha, as expected. Interesting Ock. I'm not sure it's terribly useful except in exercises like this one, but interesting nonetheless...

The Opinion Leader is interesting and useful in real games too. Sure, sometimes he helps others as much as you, but if you know how to use him he can really help out.

Thanks for helping us reply to the questions from other readers. We are still busy with the Chinese New Year celebrations (lasts a couple of days usually) and will not have time to reply until then.

We did not expect this particular session report to attract some dicussion. The solo, 2 player and 3 player reports seem to have gone out largely unnoticed.

Keep those questions coming, and we will be happy to check if we made some error during the course of the game. There is every chance we made some mistakes as there were only the two of us playing a four player game. One of us was handlling the keying of details into the PC, and the other fleshing the moves out. With 28 occupations and 34 minor improvements in play, things can really get complicated.
