My home system is due for a re-imaging. The current protection software suite, (which came with the purchase), is now expired and outdated.

I was hoping someone could point me to some good share/freeware protection software which won't be too fiddly. Thank you.

I use AVG Free. It's easy to use, updates easily, and hasn't failed me yet.

Microsoft has a free real-time scanner. It's fine:

I use Avast antivirus and Comodo firewall - both free.

However, from my reading up on them before I chose, AVG is much easier to use but less effective. So if you're not so computer-savvy it's probably a better choice.

Similar for Comodo - initially you will get a lot of prompting while it figures out what's normal for your system. I didn't mind that - it gave me a better idea of what was going on when I installed software, connected to the internet, etc. But it's probably not for the faint-hearted.

Since I'm a Charter subscriber, I just use the free 'Charter Security Suite' (aka F-Prot). Auto updates, free, and has caught everything that's come along in the past 6+ years.
