Help! I need recommendations for games that extend to 6 players. So far I have:

1. Command and Colors
2. Dune
3. BG
4. Cash and Guns

I am relatively new to serious boardgaming.

BGG rocks!

Keep in mind that just because you CAN play a game with six players (it has enough pieces in different colors) doesn't mean you SHOULD play it with six.

Example:

Bootleggers and Powerboats - great with six, always interesting, very little down time.

Carcassonne and Alhambra - both great games, both Spiel des Jahres winners, both frustrating and disappointing with six (or even five).

interesting. I have seen a couple of comments in the last few weeks that say Carcassonne is bad with 6. I've never found that to be the case. In my group, Carc always seems to play fast and fun regardless of the number of players.

Settlers on the other hand strikes me as rather dull with 5 or 6 thanks to the modifications to the building rules. It's not awful I suppose...but it doesn't feel much like Settlers anymore to me.

I second PowerGrid for 6.

I also like Hoity Toity and Age of Empires III: The Age of Discovery for meatier games that are good with 6.

For lighter games I like Diamant and Saboteur or good ol Liar's Dice

Tsuro is abstract but plays fast and fun with 6.

PitchCar (or pitchcar mini) is great fun with 6.

there are also a number of good geek lists out there on this topic:

If you can find it, pick up a copy of Dune. Dune's "optimal player number" is 6 so that all the factions are in play.

You mention "Commands and Colors". I wasn't sure if you meant Commands & Colors: Ancients, or the other series games Memoir '44 or BattleLore. The multiplayer variants in the C&C series require that you have two boards and sometimes two complete sets of the games. They are great intro wargames, but I wanted to warn you that you often need more than the base set.

shake

i've got to agree with baditude - i revently played carc with THREE base sets and EIGHT players - most of them noobs and we all had a GREAT time

sure it took a while but a few people wanted to do the same again straight away - so we did

so yeah carc with 6 is cool - i would recommend 2 base sets though

Mostly lighter fare here...

For Sale - Simple auction/bidding filler. Awesome game.

Shadow Hunters - Sort of like a structured werewolf. Probably best with 6. It's a light game and needs to be treated as such to be enjoyable. An APer can make it annoying (as with most of these)

Race for the Galaxy - Plays 6 with 2+ expansions. For more gamery types. The game is fairly light, but has a learning curve. Simultaneous action selections keep everyone involved.

Consider splitting in to 2 groups of 3 - a lot more games work with 3.

I'd put money on being able to find lots of people who would question that.

I can find at least six people who started playing Friday in my FLGS that can question that assertion.

Anyway, as a potentially useful contribution to this thread, Shadows Over Camelot works well with six.

Memoir'44 Overlord version. Awesome experience for wargamers. Easy to learn, difficult to master (if ever possible).

Six players is that somewhat elusive number in that most games that say 'plays with 6-players' really mean that they play better with 4 or 5 but can play with six in a pinch. Imperial or Imperial 2030 both play well with 6 but I think the latter plays better than the former with 6, IMO.

A Game of Thrones (first edition) with the A Game of Thrones: A Clash of Kings Expansion expansion plays really well with 6 players... this and Machiavelli are perhaps the most approachable 6-player+ (Mach can play up to 8 players) Diplomacy-like game for 6 players.

For Sale has been mentioned and worth mentioning again, as well as Starcraft (the expansion really makes this game) and Twilight Imperium (whereas, the expansion is a must in this game).

Conquest of the Empire is a great 6-player game with 2 sets of rules for two completely different gaming experiences.

For something more 'wargamey', maybe look at Napoleon's Triumph; the multi-player rules are very simple and make this a stunning 6 or even 8 player experience... all in about 2-2.5 hours.

Ricochet Robots is more a multi-player puzzle than a game but really a must have in any collection, IMO.

Dune has also been mentioned but can't be mentioned enough as a 6-player gaming experience. Wonderful.

And then there is the ultimate 6-player, 8+ hour gaming phenom that is Here I Stand. Not for the faint of heart, and perhaps a little out of reach due to price, but this is, IMO, the best 6-player game experience that I've ever had... once all the rules have been assimilated . Perhaps work towards one day playing this fine game, as should be every gamers goal arrrh

BANG!

Also I second
Shadow Hunters

and
Shadows Over Camelot

If you feel like some push-your-luck,
Cloud 9
and I also second
Diamant

If you feel like something light to start things off (and this can be converted easily into a great drinking game
Pow Wow

All of the above are great with 6.
