Yesterday I did my first steps in DIY gaming: after printing and cutting the components, I called to duty in the Space Infantry, gathered my squad and launched to accomplish my first mission. Intelligence reported that the scientists on Xargon IV had mutated into wild, dreadful beings, so I decided to gather a group with strong firepower: teamleader, sniper, fire team, c/c unit (for its armor) and three specialists to make our way through the scientific plant: scientist, technician and demolitions.

After arrival we headed for building #1, expecting the worst enemies to be there. We entered the building and advanced in direction of labratory #3, hoping the security door to be passable. Indeed it was, and so we reached the first labratory and met some resistance. There was a short and fierce fight against some mutants, but in the end no one of my crew was injured seriously.

We went back and entered building #2, just to find the second security door shut, unnecessarily guarded by some more mutants. The fight again was short and without losses (but we were running low at medics). We now made our way to labratory #2 and found there another band of mutants. It took some time, but we were able to overwhelm these dreaded guys and cleared the lab, finding some valuable medics to cure our wounded crew members.

With one lab still to be checked, we started our way through building #2. We found some grenades on our way, but as these mutants were fighting at long range so far I expected this additional weaponry to be quiet useless. Behind the second entrance to building #2 we stumbled in small group of mutants, quickly giving them their last rest. At last we reached lab #1...

...and like in a movie there was the great showdown! We had found the mutants HQ, if you want to call their small base so. The mutant leader had gathered four more mutants to prevent our mission from being successful. As for the larger number of foes, this time the specialists took their weapons and joined the fight. And the first time on our mission we encountered these mutants in melee, so at last these grenades were of good use for us. Man, I thought these specialists were useful but weak guys, but they were really furious! Our grenades had injured some of the mutants, but then it were the specialists who finished them up. I won’t forget the moment when this small, cute scientist lady started to rage and crushed the enemy leader. After the first charge the mutant leader and two more mutants were dead, the remaining two mutants were wounded and didn’t survive our second attack.

Overall, our mission were a complete success: we cleared all three labs from the mutants and had no casualities. It was the right decision to prepare for a lot of long rage combat. We had a lot of resources left in the end: especially grenades and stymo-packs were of little use against this enemy. Thanks to all members of this victorious and really great crew!

Some notes: I think I were really lucky in some moments when drawing chits, especially when determining the encounter strength. And I’m not sure if played everything right. But it was really fun and I will take further steps and try some more missions and some more enemies.

Thanks to zak for this really great work!!!

Sounds like great fun!

I can't wait to try it out myself with the soundtrack of the Amiga game Alien Breed in the background.

My first foray to Xargon IV followed the same path as yours. My squad consisted of the following: 1x Team Leader, 2x Assault Team, 2x Fire Team, 1x Scientist, 1x Technician, 1x Demolitions, 4x Grenades, 2x Medikits, 2x Intelligence.

By the time I cleared out Lab #2, I had lost both Assault Teams and had one of my Fire Teams at 1/2 health; all due to poor dice rolling.

I was able to make it to the final Lab (#1) with 1x Fire Team and 1x Scientist. Used my final remaining Intel to gain Ambush, rolled for Range ( = Melee) and threw a Grenade for 4 wounds. Not enough to kill the Mutant Leader and 3 Mutants in the Lab. The next round of combat (Fire Range) saw my Lone Fire Team Take out 1 mutant before he and the Scientist were gunned down...
