The first time we played the game, we didn't do LOS right. We had our archer stand behind the melee characters and shoot. But rereading the rules, it appears that all characters block LOS so that is illegal.

In the second game, we played with the proper LOS rules meaning there was usually a path to the archer. The OL always went for the archer just walking by the melee characters and attacking the archer because it was easier to kill. We tried to move the melee characters in ways to protect him and use guard but he usually got to the archer anyway.

Any advice on how to effectively play the archer?

There's usually a path to the hero in back even if there's no LOS, given that you can move diagonally around obstacles and opponents.

In every party, some hero exists that is the easiest to kill (for his conquest value). The overlord will kill this hero repeatedly. That's just how the game works.

If you're losing too much conquest, it probably has little to do with how you're playing the archer and more with general things:

1) Kill monsters faster, by equipping good weapons, and spending fatigue to move so that you can attack more times per turn.
1a) Equip better weapons by opening chests right away, even if you haven't killed the monsters in the room.
1b) Spend more fatigue by drinking vitality potions.

2) Maintain good line-of-sight coverage to prevent monsters spawning nearby.

3) Finish the quest quickly so that the overlord doesn't have as much time to gather cards and threat.

4) Always play with at least 3 heroes, because the scaling rules don't work; 2 heroes is almost unplayable.

5) If it's important that a monster not be able to attack you, don't just get behind something, count out its movement and make sure you're actually out of range.

Good shop weapons are basically the ones with green dice; the Bow and Mage Staff are essentially only usable if you have some source of bonus damage, and the Dagger is only used for its off-hand bonus. Also make sure all heroes are wearing armor; non-magic heroes with 4 base speed or less should always go for Chainmail unless the shop runs out.

Thanks for the advice. We've only played twice so we are still learning a lot. I am rereading the rule book and am surprised at how much we are doing wrong.

Archers tend to "snipe", meaning they will move forward a few spaces to get clear LOS, fire, then move back into cover. Both good and evil archers do this (skeletons are notorious for this since they have high movement).
