It's like Crokinole on ice. Why is it so engrossing and calming to watch? Discuss.

Both are simply awesome. I love playing Crokinole and I think I'd have a blast if I ever got the chance to try Curling.

I know. I would so curl if I could.

Though the team wearing the diamond pattern pants is pushing way past golfing sensibilities.

Also the announcer just said uh-boot

They have an open house at the Wauwatosa Curling Club here in Milwaukee. A co-worker used to curl and her husband still does.

She says they're cultish. She said they are so damn nice it's hard to break away. Also, they have free beer until Midnight on curling nights.

Unfortunately, I had to drop curling this year, because our schedule is just too busy. I hope to pick it up again at some point, though!

Shouldn't that be curltist?

The nice thing must be a mandatory thing because of the Canadian connection.

Drinking and curling seems like an accident waiting to happen. Them stones look heavy. 38-44lbs doesn't seem like something I want meeting my toe/foot the hard way.

The way they teach curling now, you never even lift the rocks off the ice. The biggest danger is slipping and falling on the ice.

I think that all right-thinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that ordinary, decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am.

One of the reasons we want to move to Kansas City soon is becuase they have curling clubs (rinks?) and my wife and I (mostly me) want to try it out. Curling appeals to me because of the applied physics, much like billiards and snooker (not that I'm any good at either of these). It's easy for me to figure out how far off center I have to hit the ball (or rock in this case) to get a certain angle of deflection. I used to be pretty good at Putt-Putt for the same reason.

Of course, once I get to actually shoving big rocks around, all my theory will probably go out the window.

This is true in pool as well. Balls rarely exit collisions at the angle your physics books would have you believe -- unless your physics book involves detailed study of friction acting in 3 dimensions.

Physics books always have examples that use "ideal" situations -- frictionless surfaces, perfectly smooth balls, no atmospheric drag, etc., so those examples will always differ from the real world.

A curling rink does have a nearly frictionless surface, but the rocks are not perfectly smooth, the game is not played in a vacuum, and there is incomplete control over the force and spin imparted to the rock as it leaves the hand.

Then you add the sweepers and their effects, and you are pretty far from what a textbook would say is the "proper" outcome of the throw.

So this reminded me of these table top toys that they had back in the 80s that looked like curling stones. I started doing a google image search trying to find them and one of the searches I tried was "shuffle board toys." Even with the search filter set at its default moderate I got a black and white picture of a woman holding a cigarette to her vagina!

I think the closest sport to curling has to be bowls. If I could choose between the two I would allways go for curling.
Unless I have to move to australia to play bowls.

Can't wait to reach my retirement age

I don't think of curling as calming to watch. It's very tense.

Now, darts or poker, that's calming zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I like curling. I mean, shuffleboard on ice with a tea kettle. What could be better?

I admit that it's no more a sport than seed spitting or keeping a balloon from touching the ground by hitting it over and over up in the air. It's a skill, no doubt. But that doesn't mean it's Olympic caliber. Kinda like that Hot Wheels snowboard race thing or plenty of other skills that have been elevated to Olympic events.
