Have to wipe my laptop and reimage it per stupid crap. So, I've been given a network location to back my dev area up onto before the wipe.

Guesses on how long it's gonna take?

I started it at 1pm EST. Right now 5 mins later, it's still "Preparing to Copy..."

Price is Right rules? 301 laugh

EDIT: I'll be nice, and optimistic, and guess 222 minutes instead

10 Microsoft minutes.

This is where it tells you that it will only take 10 minutes regardless of how long it actually is taking

Yes, like where time goes up instead of down, when it's not just standing still?

10 minutes remaining.... [6 minutes later] 13 minutes remaining...

Oh no, real betting! If it goes past 4:50, I won't be here to see it end!

As for time remaining. Sometimes it gives a number--usually in the upper hundreds of minutes. But often it will just give up and give no time estimate.

You must have caught the part where I mention it's a corporate intranet.

BTW, it's 3:28 by my clock and the little green bar is a little over 1/3rd of the way full--say 40%.

When sticking data on a shared drive on a corporate LAN, more often than not the constraining factor is the physical setup and the usage patterns of the shared drive.

Without knowing that, it's easy to be off by a couple of orders of magnitude: A server with a single disk used by 100 people could be a 5Mbps nightmare. A 5 disk RAID 10 setup could give you over 150 Mbps. If the corporate network was wider than one site we could get even worse: the disk could be remote, accessible through a shared T1, your average speed doesn't beat 50 Kbps.

Yeah, that's the fun part! All I was given was a network address...

I am pretty sure that it is on-site. Beyond that, who knows!!?!..

The server will crash mid copy and you'll lose the most critical bit of your data.

It'll still be going when you leave for the day. It'll lock up overnight and you'll have to start over.

Let's see. I did a backup of 40 gigs once from my machine at work to the server. It took 5 hours.

So I'll say 6 hours. 7pm EST. That is if it doesn't get hung up on a file with a weird name or the network goes down or... or...

I always find it's actually faster to do it in chunks of no more than 2 gigs. Dunno why.

Okay, results are in. It stopped after I left, but it was not too hard to find the end time from Modified Dates on the folders.

End time: 6:42 EST

So that's 5 hrs 42 mins, or 342 mins.

...so, the winner is tickmanfan with 360 min.

Thank you for playing guess the time it takes to copy 30 Gigs across a corporate intranet. You can see further episodes this fall on NBC right after The Bachelor.
