Re: Monthly Board/Card Game Night in Hamilton Ontario: NEW LOCATION!
Hans, it looks like you still have last month's date listed. What's the date for the February event? I'm going to try to make it if I can.

Ack! Thanks Brian, cut and paste error. It's Feb 23. For future reference, it's always the last Tuesday of the month. Corrected above.

It'd be great to have you join us Brian.

If you make it out and can bring your copy of Java - I'd love to play that game.

Wow this is literally walking distance from my house! I might have to finally have to take the plunge and try out a gaming night.

Couple questions:

1. How "newbie" friendly is this?
I have played only a couple games on that list and have never played in a gaming night setting so I'm not sure how well I need to know the rules/etiquette.

2. How welcoming to new members?
Also I already know my fiance will not be interested in this so I would be going alone. Will I feel out of place?

3. Should players bring their own games or is it picked from a stock there?

4. Anything else I should know?

Hi Brandon:

To answer your questions:

1) We are almost always teaching games to people, so being unfamiliar with the games is not a problem. We usually start of the evening with some shorter and/or more simple games while there is still a chance other people might show up, and then, depending on who is present, break up into groups for longer and/or more complicated games a bit later in the evening.

2) My hope is that we are very welcoming to new people, but of course I wouldn't know, having started the thing. :-) We have a pretty broad array of gamer archetypes that show up, from much more casual players to die-hard old-school wargamers to dedicated euro-game afficianados, and we all seem to get along all right.

3) We usually have a lot of games on hand, so if you don't really care what you play, don't feel like you need to bring any. However, looking over your collection I am almost certain you would get in a game or two of Dominion: Seaside before the night is over if you brought it. Also, Roll through the Ages, Through the Ages, Metropolys, Shadows over Camelot and Downfall of Pompeii are all games I personally would like to try if you were willing to teach them.

4) I don't think so, just come on out and see how you like it. Hope to see you there!

Hans

Ok after all that I can't make this one. I will definitely try to make it out next time, especially if you are playing in that location.
