We're watching the Wrath of Khan (yes, I'm on BGG at the same time, this is why I have a netbook).
I just told my step-daughter that if she only ever watched one Star Trek movie, this is the one.
Am I right people? If she only ever watches one Star Trek movie, is The Wrath of Khan the one? If not, what should it be?
Quick, quick, it's already started...

You have a good point.
But I would also sugest one of these:

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
For a good time travel Trek

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
For a good classic Trek

Movies, not series. There's no way she'll watch the series.

I dunno. If you are showing it to kids, I think IV is the way to go. I still pull the covers over my ears when I sleep because of Wrath of Kahn.

If you are talking original series spin off moves then IT IS KHAN!

(if you talk all movies, I think first contact almost gives it a run for it's money. Who am I kidding, it's Khan all the way).

VI is Undiscovered Country, a Hamlet reference oddly used. IV is a "Save the Whales!" film. II is indeed the one to see.

Wrath of Khan, definitely, if you are only going to see one Star Trek movie. Then if it piques some interest, you can then watch III and IV for a nice little trilogy. If you watch IV first, it spoils the trilogy. You can even add the original episode Space Seed before you watch Wrath of Khan. It's short enough and adds depth to the movie.

No, started with Khan (well, we started with the first one yesterday but we didn't make her watch it). The bridge of the Enterprise is being blown up (there's SMOKE coming out of the consoles!) and she's just declared "this is lame". WHERE DID I GO WRONG????

Khan assumes an attachment to the ship and characters. The development is based on prior commitment. A newcomer does not have that involvement.

I saw the damned thing with my wife on the plane home after our "honeymoon" (visiting relatives) and even that level of euphoria doesn't gloss over the atrocity that is that film.

As for going outside, I'm assuming you're too drunk or wouldn't be posting this. kiss devil

OK, I've seen the new one, and I consider it lame. Which probably means it's the one she'd like most. She's certainly not enjoying Khan.

Moshe, Moshe, Moshe.

Where have you gone so wrong?

Detach yourself from the old trek and welcome yourself to the actual 21st century. Where the effects and acting are lightyears beyond the originals.

We have tons of baggage with the old Trek. That level of familiarity does not yet exist with the new old crew.

Look at it through new eyes. The eyes of a child. And you will find the new reboot far more successful as being character, story and action driven.

Far from flawless, it does however, reveal the cobwebs and creaks of a quaint film like Khan. Much like the cobwebs that no doubt cling to your glasses making you not see true quality as you let nostalgia fog your vision.

Fixed. One of those words is correct, but just one.

You must have seen a different movie.

The new Spock has shown astounding complexity and depth in a mere 2 hours. How many hours do we know old Spock to have developed? The denouncement of the Vulcan Academy, the look of rebellion in his eye as he chooses to let Human win and join Starfleet. This Spock is driven, and so revealed in a tiny smidge of history compared to the old Spock. That moment is as defining as old Spock "Needs of the many" line which took decades to build to.

The characters shine.

The story obliterates most original trek works. Esepecially Khan, which requires the prequal episode to carry any decent weight.

Old Trek had lots of misses. And some great hits. New trek - the record is far stronger, but has to continue to see if the flow grows as well.
