So, I've played this game numerous times, but finally got my own (used) copy. Looking through the rules, I was just wondering what exactly the painting on the front cover of the "Battles of the Third Age" rulebook is. Any ideas? It's very cool and all (of course - since it's John Howe), but confusing.

It looks like the Tower of Orthanc, but as far as I remember, there was only one of those...

Given the banners of Rohan on the horsemen, I'd guess it's the Hornburg (aka Helm's Deep).

Edit: OK, I just realized you said rulebook, not box cover. No idea what the rulebook cover represents. The towers look dark; could be the tower at the top of Cirith Ungol...were there two of those? I don't think it could be Barad-dur.

Hmm. Now you've got me thinking.

Very tall siege towers, one aflame, under a hail of arrows as they roll forward presumably to the walls of Minas Tirith.

John Howe's caption confirms as much in his gorgeous portfolio online:

Ahhhh, Thanks! Makes sense...

(but how cliche' that the armies of Mordor would make Barad-Dur shaped siege engines... shake )
