This morning I was checking out the 50% off games clearance table at my local Barnes & Noble, when I spotted Cosmic Encounter amongst the fray. That's the one I wanted, as my game group plays this a lot and our groups' copy is wearing out. So I stood there, clutching my precious and looking over the remaining titles to see if anything else caught my eye when I was approached by a good looking man in his mid-30's.

"Oh Cosmic Encounter!" he exclaimed, "I've been thinking about getting that game for a while now!"

"Oh yes, it's a really good game. You should definitely consider getting it." I said, as there was one more copy on the half-price table.

"Are you buying that one for your boyfriend or your husband?" he asked.

"What?! Oh no," I answered honestly, not cluing in as to what he was getting at, "I'm buying this for me." I think I rolled my eyes here too, mostly because I get tired of guys assuming every game I buy must be for some male to play, not me.

"Oh! That's great!" he said enthusiastically, "Well, since you're available, how about you and I get together and try it out sometime? I think you're really cute. And you like real board games! Have you tried Dominion? I love that one! Would you like to go to lunch, or dinner? Wow! You really like games?! We could have a really good time! I'm name deleted by the way."

Oh. Crap. I've just been hit on in the book store!!! laugh Well, at least he was good looking, and it was the game section of the book store -- does Barnes and Noble realize what they've let themselves in for by carrying serious board games?!

I chuckled and apologized, told him that yes, the game is for me, but I also have a husband, and a regular game group, and I was flattered but unavailable, sorry.

I was also thinking that Cosmic Encounter was a strange choice for a "date game", because it plays 3+. So who was going to be the third in our ménage à trois?!

So, ladies, if you're looking for luv be sure to check out the games sale table at your local Barnes & Noble. I can't guarantee the same results if you walk around clutching a copy of Red November or Gulo Gulo, but it's worth experimenting! Good luck! kiss Be sure to report back here!

Diane, you don't have to tell your husband when you're seeing other men.

Also, he's probably on BGG...

Do we need a poll: Which women do you hit on in book stores?

[ ] Women holding Cosmic Encounter

Personally, I can't say he has bad taste...

I went to the B&N near my work today and their 50% table didn't have anything I wanted.

I wonder if I should start panning the thrift stores for gold.

Hah! If Cosmic Encounter gets me dinner, I'd bet Red November would stop at drinks.

Summary: If you're a female purchasing a board game for yourself, you must be single. No way a respectable husband would allow his wife to have any hobbies of her own.

Looks like you're not missing out on much.

Seriously though, how could he possibly get out that whole spiel before you could say you were married? He must have taken a deep breath. I can't imagine saying all of that to someone I just met, even if she were a beautiful girl holding a fun board game. If you had given him twenty more seconds I think he would have started picking out names for your children.

Yeah, it was like one of those "elevator speeches" -- You have 30 seconds to make your case! Go! I wasn't expecting it at all, so was temporarily stunned into silence before my brain got active again enough to cut in. You have to give him credit though, for a very solidly prepared presentation! I wonder how many times he's done this before?

LOL, too true!! Maybe he's been watching too much Oprah or Dr. Phil.

Gulo Gulo obviously. She's either a MILF or an adorable doting aunt with great taste in games.
