A friend of mine is familiar with the workings of face-to-face werewolf, but recently expressed curiosity as to how the slower playstyle of a BGG game differs from the quick play of a face-to-face game. I asked him if he'd like to find out the hard way, and he accepted.

So here is an opportunity to welcome Moozers to the BGG Werewolf community in your own special way.

devil

Basic 9-Player Ruleset

Good Roles:

Seer - Each night receives a vision of a target player as 'wolf' or 'not wolf.' The seer receives a vision on Night 0 of one randomly chosen player that is 'not wolf.' Thereafter, the seer chooses which player to view.

Priest - Each night receives a vision of a target deceased player. The vision tells the priest that deceased player's exact role. The priest does not receive any vision on Night 0. Thereafter, the priest chooses one deceased player to view.

Hunter - If only two players remain in the game and the hunter is one of those players, then the good team wins even if the other player is a werewolf.

3 Villagers - Ordinary villagers with no special powers.

Evil Roles:

2 Werewolves - The werewolves know each other, and will have a private chat room in Cassandra. Each night the wolves choose one target player to kill. There is no kill on Night 0.

Sorcerer - Each night receives a vision of a target player as 'seer' or 'not seer.' The sorcerer receives a vision on Night 0 of one randomly chosen player that is 'not seer.' On subsequent nights, the sorcerer chooses which player to view. The sorcerer wins if the wolves win, but does not count as a werewolf for parity purposes (see below).

Victory Conditions:

Good - All good players win if both werewolves are eliminated, or if the last two players remaining are the hunter and one werewolf. The sorcerer does not have to be eliminated in order for Good to win.

Evil - All evil players win if the wolves achieve parity: if at any time the number of wolves remaining equals the number of non-wolves remaining (including the sorcerer), evil wins. However, if one wolf is left with the hunter, then good wins. The sorcerer counts as a 'non-wolf' for these purposes.

Lynch Rules:

Each day players vote for one player to be lynched. The player receiving the most votes is killed. If there is a tie between two or more players, the tied player with the Longest Held Last Vote (LHLV) is killed.

Lynch time is 4pm BGG time. Votes cast with this time-stamp are counted. Votes cast after this time are invalid. Votes made during the night phase are invalid.

All votes must conform to the Cassandra Vote Tally System rules. (Will be posted once the game starts). If all living players vote "nightfall" it will speed up the dusk.

Neither the player's role or team is revealed upon lynch.

Night Orders:

Wolves, Seer, Sorcerer, and Priest must all submit their night orders by 5pm BGG time. They do this by using the Cassandra Game Order system in the Cassandra Chat System.

The wolves' night kill choice is revealed with the DAWN post. The players' role and team are not revealed.

If all living players (including those with out night actions) click on the 'Lock Game Actions' button in Cassandra, it will speed up Dawn.

Do not post the content of your Mod Chat room to the game thread. You may summarize, but direct copying is not allowed. Consider that like showing your card to the group in a face-to-face game.

This game will start when it fills up. The D1 lynch will be delayed by a day if the game fills up close to lynch time. First lynch will not be before Monday, February 22nd.

Roles will be assigned completely randomly.

Re: Moozers' Trial by Fire - a standard 9p game
totally predicted that might happen, hehe

the thing I'm majorly confused about, and why I wanted Nykkel to run a game like this for me is this...by what methods and techniques do villagers actually decide how to vote? It just seems crazy to me to be able to judge things based on who does or does not type and what they type. I'm so used to having faces and emotions to make things clear for me.

Yeah, my vote was jokey. Nothing counts until the game starts.

Honestly, the first few games, it's really, really hard to find evil. The game is mostly about empirical evidence (seer claims, obvious lies or misdirection).

It took my lots and lots of games to be able to read a post from someone and go "well, that person is evil for sure." Tone reads kind of come with familiarity with the players and just having lots of games under your belt. I'm actually pretty horrible at tone reads, but there are times when someone makes a totally benign post and I just new they were evil.

I think, once the game gets going and you start to see some claims and counter claims, you'll start to see how it still works online. Like as soon as someone claims your role or someone claims seer and calls you a wolf when you are not a wolf, you'll go "ohhhhh, so that's how it is, is it"

Re: Moozers' Trial by Fire - N0 processing in progress.
The Cassandra Automatic Vote Tally System

Your Moderator has enabled the Cassandra Automatic Vote Tally system
for this game. In order for it to function correctly, your votes will
need to be formatted correctly. The following rules will explain what
you will need to do:

Players
1. All votes must be bolded

2. The entire vote statement must be bolded and enclosed in bracekts: [vote jmilum]

3. Only one vote per post.

4. If you [vote nightfall] your vote will be locked (voting
nightfall is allowed in the same post as a vote for a player, but it
must come after it, this does not violate Rule #3)

5. Vote tallies will be automatically posted to the game thread hourly
if the tally has changed. The Tally and Vote Logs (for each game day)
are also available on the Cassandra game page.

6. If your vote is not counted be sure to check the Vote Log page and
see if it was marked invalid and why.

7. Case does not matter and simple typos will not cause the vote to fail.

8. You may [vote no lynch] if your game allows it.

9. Non voting players will be listed in the tallies. This will only be
correct if the Moderator notes which players have been killed (see below)

10. Editing a vote post will invalidate the vote and it will not be counted.

Moderators
1. The moderator will need to post [Dawn] when the day begins
(after the night results are posted) and [Dusk] when the lynch
deadline has passed and the day is over. Votes will not be counted
after [Dusk] has been posted. They will be registered again
after [Dawn] is next posted.

2. You may include a day number in the dawn and dusk post for
informational purposes, but it will not be used by the system.
Cassandra will increment an internal counter each time it sees
[Dawn] no matter what day is shown in a dawn post (i.e.
[Dawn 3] the three is allowed but ignored)

3. After dusk has been posted, the Moderator may go to the game page
on Cassandra to request a Final Tally to be posted before the normal
scan period has elapsed (i.e. Game Y gets scanned at 45 min. after the
hour, if it lynches at 7pm the moderator may request a tally to be
posted from the game page before 7:45pm. it will also be posted
regardless of whether or not it has been changed since the last
posting) - Do this by clicking on the 'Retrieve Final Lynch Time Vote' link.

4. You will need to note which players were killed via the lynch or at night by
either posting [killed jmilum] in the thread, or by going to the game
page and editing the player list. When posting in the thread, be sure to post
[dusk] before posting the lynch kill, and post [dawn] before
posting the night kill.
Example:
A. lynch time has passed so post [dusk]
B. goto the game page and select a final tally to be posted
C. check the final tally and post [killed melsana]
D. after the night deadline has passed post [dawn]
E. post the night kill with [killed kima]

Your Moderator has chosen to use the Longest Held Last Vote method for a tiebreaker - This is just for Cassandra system, and there may be a different tiebreaker specified by your Moderator in the ruleset.

Re: Moozers' Trial by Fire - N0 processing in progress.
"So you call yourself 'Moozers', eh? What kind of silly name is that?"

"Oh, yeah, like Gelatinous Goo is any better."

"Pipe down, n00b."

"I'm no newbie. I'm just as good at this game as you are."

"Oh yeah? Then prove it!"

[DAWN]

...Yeah, I didn't really have a flavor idea in mind.

First lynch is at 4pm BGG on Monday.
Night orders are due by 5pm BGG on Monday.

If you can't be around to submit your night orders, submit conditional ones in advance in case the person you planned to view gets lynched.

Let there be werewolf!
