I just want to clear up a fuzzy part for me:

On page 7 it says:

A Legion (for movement purposes) is comprised of at least one Leader
(Caesar or General) and a group of up to 7 land Combat
Units (Infantry, Cavalry, and Catapults).

Does that mean you are LIMITED to ONLY 7 combat units for movement?

Thanks!!

Jim

EDIT: Found answers to the other question in forum after posting whistle.

Yes unless you have multiple leaders. There can only be 7 units per leader and they fight separately.

So if you have 2 leaders than I 'assume' that you are allowed up to 8 Combat units? (this is for movement purposes)

Also, when you have combat, you are only allowed 5 Combat units +1 for EACH Leader... IF you have more than 5 they must be held in reserve; correct? So... if you have 2 leaders, you can have 7 combat units fighting? (just confirming this) Haven't played yet, just read the rules (Classic) for first time today.

Thanks!

Jim

For CotE1, each leader can control a legion. So with two leaders one can move 14 units, up to 7 in each legion, onelegion per leader. I do not know if CotE2 uses the same movement rules.

OK... that makes sense now!

Last question for this... (I promise )

For combat, as your moving example above; if you have 2 leaders and 14 combat units, you could only combat with 7, and 7 more in reserve?

EDIT: I am only referring to the COTE Classic rules right now. (one rule book at a time please

OK... so maybe it wasn't the last questionwhistle

When playing Classic Rules, say for example, you leave 3 soldiers and a cavalry in a city.

The city gets invaded; and the defender has NO Generals/Caesar.

1. Can the soldiers and cavalry defend normally without a leader?

2. Can the soldiers and cavalry retreat to a friendly region without a leader?

3. Can the cavalry "Pursue" a retreating attacker without a leader?

Thanks!

Thanks!! That was fast, I kind of figured that if the 2nd couldn't retreat, then the 3rd question would be moot.

Thanks!!

Old thread but worth a "reactivation"...

Quote:
1. Can the soldiers and cavalry defend normally without a leader?

Though I'm not so sure they would defend "normally" in real... interestingly I did not find any place in the rules stating that it's not possible. Hence I would also conclude that a Combat Legion might have no leader at all (if none is present in the attacked province) and answer the question by yes.

Quote:
2. Can the soldiers and cavalry retreat to a friendly region without a leader?

I did not find any rule stating that this would not be possible. According to the rules a leader is always needed in the movement phase. In combat phase (including retreat) there seems to be no obligation for the presence of a leader (like in the question above). Hence I would personaly answer this question by YES.

Any other insights / views are of course welcome. meeple

Quote:
3. Can the cavalry "Pursue" a retreating attacker without a leader?

Since attacking without a leader is not allowed (movement needed to cross the province border first) the answer will be of course indirectly no.
