Great Old One: Zhar the twin terrors
Investigator: Darrell Simmons

Darrell Simmons a native of Arkham joined the Arkham Advertiser as a photographer after high school. He always had a feeling the small town wasn’t right but one day on an assignment he saw something. His editor brushed it off and said he was just seeing things but Darrell knows what he saw was real. He is out on a mission to find proof of this evil in the city so everyone will believe him.

Simmons started his investigation finding some clues in the Unnamable after a massive vortex opens in Independent Square. While there he came upon a warped mirror looking at himself in what looked to be another time and peering closer he appeared to be much older as well. The figure was holding an ankh in one hand and a sacrificial blade in the other. Before he could get a better look at this the image vanished leaving behind the items in the room he now is standing in. These may be more viable clues so he takes them with him.

Hearing of another vortex opening in the graveyards he goes to the church to find sanctuary. As he is leaving a vortex engulfs the Unnamable and releases creatures into the area. Simmons lights a candle in the prayers for those souls that are believed to be lost and the priest there blesses him.

Simmons decides to deal with the gate in the graveyard having found ample information regarding it. When arriving he comes face to face with a cultist which he impales on his ancient spear. The gate engulfs him and sends him into Another Dimension.

While roaming the dimension Simmons carefully avoids the gaze of a gigantic eye that is watching an alter steadily. Moving away from the eye Simmons finds himself lost in a labyrinth of interchanging walls for more than a day. Eager to leave he finally finds a way out but it is guarded by 100s of monsters and Simmons cannot find the right time to make a run for it. After hiding for a good while something large and hungry seems to be headed towards him. Simmons sneaks back and round and finds a way around the mass of monsters exiting the gate and sealing it with the clues he found.

Reading a paper he learns that while he was in the dimension that a construction crew unearthed creatures into the streets, and that police showed up in the North Side and killed the children of the goat. Also a rumor of a Cover up is going on Down Town.

Simmons goes to the curiosity shop to look for a better way to handle the oddities that are plaguing this city. While browsing the shop the city goes into an increased state of terror as monsters escape from some mysterious crates and in other parts of the town there are strange sightings. Then to top everything off Funnel Clouds are looming over head.

Simmons leaves the shop not finding anything worthwhile and rushes over to Independent Square where a gate engulfs him. He is zipped over to the City of the Great Race where he finds a .357 magnum on the ground. While he is lurking in the dimension a gate bursts through his seal on the graveyard and the rumor of a cover up seemed to be true. All the clues even the ones Simmons had were false leads and had to be disregarded.

While Simmons was looking for a way out of the City of the Great Race a Gnoph-Keh attacks him right before he can leave the dimension. He kills it with his brazier of souls and jumps out of the gate closing it but he didn’t have enough information to seal it up. Upon leaving the silver twilight lodge released monsters into the city.

Simmons runs up to Hibbs Road house to search for some clues and avoids being knocked over by a drunken local. Some gypsies set up shop in the Southside Streets and cause a panic among the locals raising the terror level yet again.

Simmons runs over to the Unvisited Isle to find a large pile of bones under the boughs of a willow. Wrapped up in a case under these bones was a spell of the curse of Azathoth. The terror level increases in Arkham due to an evil fog sweeping over the city.

Simmons has seen a lot of strange things and rushes over to the Asylum for some psychiatric care before anything worse happens. A fund raiser starts at the historical society for the king in yellow. Simmons donates and gets a Glass of Mortian as prize but the town doesn’t take well to the news of the play and the terror level rises again.
Lightning strikes in two separate places in Arkham opening a much larger vortex than the half opened ones Simmons has been seeing and out steps Zhar the twin terrors.

Simmons with the last bit of sanity he has casts the curse of Azathoth and unloads his .357 Magnum into Zhar. Maiming half of the creature as it whips its tentacle around Simmons. Simmons reloads and again unloads his magnum into it dropping Zhar for the first time. But just then the other half comes at him. He unsheathes a magical knife he had and slashes at the creature barely scratching it as the creature devours him in one gulp. Darrell Simmons is no more.

One investigator Zhar final combat is one of those shake things, where normally one investigator final combat is the easiest, not so with Zhar. Since you need to kill him twice and extra hits on the round after killing the first Zhar don't count, need a GOO-attack canceller. To make matters worse, if you don't have one, you get the Zhar token, so can only use 1 hand. Clue-hoarding + Joe Diamond and/or +1 Fight Skill I could see it happening.

Reminds me of a D&D session that involved my beloved 11th.-level Monk. He mistakenly looked into a mirror that sucked him into another diminsion. I ended up losing all of my weapons and items. Not a good night by any means.

I enjoyed reading your report, btw.
