Me neither. The only real combo here is the Inn and the Fish Restaurant. Even then, you're only going to use it once (3 actions): take a big pile of fish, smoke, sell. Unless it comes out in the late game and you have access to 15-20 fish, using the Fish Hut's ability is a complete waste of time.

If players have any idea that the Inn is coming into play, I doubt fish will build up past 10 or so on the docks. If the Inn is already in play and the Fish Restaurant is coming (or vice versa), fish is definitely not going to build up past 10 or so. If they were the first two buildings in the game, I'd say players would take the fish at 8 (getting 24 francs in three actions).

I suppose you could take 10 fish, go to the Fishery for ~6 more, smoke, and sell. 48 in four actions is good. Not overpowered but good.

What are the odds of seeing the Inn and the Fish Restaurant in the same game, though?

I just played a 3 player game where the fish hut came out as the first Special Building. I had 10 fish and went to the hut every other action for the rest of the game. Getting a 50% increase in fish numbers leads to exponential growth and resulted in a little over 5000 fish at the end. I shipped them over the Bridge on the Seine and got a silly score of 1830pts.

Now it would have been possible for other people to join in the cycle but as they had less fish than I did all that would have happened is that I would have gained more points than them for the action.

Our general reaction is that the building is stupid as it creates a lottery as to who is going to win as it will be the person with most fish at that time.

OK in order to see this card as sensible and fair, what should the other players have done?

I can't quite tell if this post is a joke. Anyway (sorry if I'm falling for it):

1.) What were you doing with 10 fish at the start of round 5?
2.) Evening assuming you were the second player (with a 3-action push round on rounds 2,5,8, 11, 14, and 17), you should have 18 fish at the beginning of round 6, then 22, then 27. then you have a push round again, but only your middle action is at the fish hut, so you have 33. Then 41, 52. Round 11 is your second chance to raise your total twice in a single round, to 117. At this point someone should just get in your way a single time, so that you end the round with 68 instead. Then: 81, 109, 150, 211, 302. On round 17, someone gets in your way again so you cannot have two actions within one round. So: 438, 642. Your final score should be 1/3 of that, or 214. It's extremely easy to beat 214, even if your opponents take a single blocking action each, and especially because you're not meaningfully competing for anything else. They should easily have 275 or more, probably 300 or more.

Obviously we can go through some permutations where you make a double-play after selling, but honestly, that just means that early on they camp on the building for one full round by taking resources to screw you over. Regardless, only incompetent players allow what you describe. Your strategy is completely at their mercy. I can only imagine it being a problem if they didn't understand your intentions until you already had 100+ fish, but at that point, they are to blame, not you, since they could easily have stopped it.

If you're not the second player, this never gets off the ground.

Again, sorry if this is not a serious question.

Where's the 22 coming from, why is it the next step?

If you have 18, that's 9 pairs, so you get 9 new fish for 27 total after your next visit.

I'm factoring in the upkeep every round, and assuming that on round 5 he uses the Fish Hut twice. 10 --> 15 and 15 --> 22, then down four for the upkeep to end round 5 with 18.

Then up to 27 (as you say) but down 5 for the upkeep to end round six with 22, and so on.

There are a bunch of minor permutations to this if he had a franc or two going in, especially if he had loans, but I think the overall shape remains in tact. All it takes is for his opponents to let the upkeep hit him twice in a row fairly early to cripple any game-breaking potential.

I wonder if it becomes a problem if the fishery is the other spot in the rotation. It probably just makes his opponents spend more time keeping him down, while still easily winning. After all, if 1/3 players aren't competing for the offers at all, it would be easy to park on a building and stock up on resources for 2-3 actions in a row.

Upkeep initially came from a wooden boat and then meat and bread

Fish came from taking some from the fish space and also using the Marketplace once

If you ignore the times you have three actions in a a three player game the sequence goes something like:

10
16 (+1 fish from the building ability at end of round, +5 from visiting the fish hut)
25, 38, 58, 88, 133 etc.

These numbers build up at such a fast rate that blocking once or twice doesn't create an effective block as all it does is reduce the final count down from a silly high number to a high number.

Lastly those 214 points Jack estimated you would have are from roughly half your actions. How many are you getting on the rest?

You're right, I did forget about the +1.

It doesn't seem like the player attempting this would get very many points from the other half of the actions, since none of them can be used claiming offers. Certainly the player might be able to get some iron and coal later in the game.

If the player has a wooden ship, that does make them more of a threat, but as you pointed out, the other players can use the building too. Fish is not hard to come by, and if one player needs to be stopped, that just makes it more worthwhile to take. That way, no one is "falling on their sword."

All it takes is for the player to your left to use the Fish Hut once, claim an offer, then move off so that the opponent to their left can do the same thing. It takes you five actions to get back to it unless you're willing to sell and give up your +1. Eventually, either the upkeep will catch up or there won't be enough actions remaining to hit 600 fish. It's preventable, and not by complex means. Run the clock.

Also, this is easily the worst building in LGH if it comes out on round 8 or later. So at least it has some early game impact, if one player wants to try shenanigans with it.

I wasn't part of your game but I get the impression that everyone just resigned themselves to defeat and blamed the game for it.

Richard, let me run away with coal and coke and the shipping line, and I'll also end up with crazy amount of cash in the end. As Jack says, if all the players decide they have been defeated and don't matter changing this fact - their fault, your fault, not the game's. Fish is so bad, REALLY bad that it easily piles up to 10+ in the mid-game, so it's absolutely easy for anybody to start your broken "strategy". Also, there's the Fishery. Someone else could start there. It only needs one more player to break your "strategy".

The Fishing Hut nearly didn't make it to the set not because it's overly overpowered, but because fish is so weak. 50% more fish still sounds like nothing. In order to get a strategy running like you say, you really need to amass resources like wood, energy, cattle and grain early on to be able to build a ship and create enough secondary food to face the upkeep. Your opponents surely failed at this point. It's nearly impossible to amass fair amounts of bread and meat so early if your opponents are paying attention.

As I said, I must have missed the joke. Your strategy might be a new Zoo+Fishing Hut combo in solo play that finally breaks 1000 francs. In mutli-player, it's easily prevented.

Indeed, Fishing Hut, Inn and Fish Restaurant are a very weird solo game combo:

I actually just had the Fisherman's Hut / Zoo combo come up in a two player game with my wife. It was our first game with Le Grande Hameau in, and I only bought the Hut because hey, 2 fish every round, it's like a mini ship for 2 food. I already had managed to get both the Fishery and Smokehouse earlier, so at first I figured that the Fishery would be the better deal - then I caught a peek at the Zoo by using the Marketplace, and realized how stupid things could get. I started making and grabbing fish like mad, and when the Zoo hit, I had to use it just to get enough Francs to purchase it.. not that it would have stopped me if she had.

It took a couple turns for her to clue in to what I was pulling, partly because she was blinded by all the nice resources I was not taking and she was enjoying getting some nice piles for herself.

The first time I pulled in 40+ coins on the Zoo, she realized that she was not going to be able to stop me much - with only her to block me, she would have to forgo most actions to block one building, and I could continue to use the other in the meantime. We called it a game around Round 9, but I did the math and figured I should have been able to finish around 3700 francs. (and that was simply by going back and forth, not even playing around with selling and buying the hut to get really silly with it.)

At first, was thinking that this card was ridiculous and would have to be taken out - but I think it came down to a perfect storm - more players would be able to put a stop to those shenanigans, and just the Hut alone isn't that bad, it has to be combo'd with some other card in a two player game, since there is no Bridge on the Seine, and when the Bridge is in, other players should be able to block you often enough, and your number of actions to do this drops drastically.

Anyway, obviously this is not new to anyone here, but it sure was fun to "discover" this in my own game, even if it did cause an early end to gaming!

Yeah, it's a pretty rare combo if you draw your special buildings at random. It's funny it really did happen to you. And like with every "strategy", if your opponent does not "smell" the threat, you win. Calling the game was the best you could do.
