The Bohnanza basegame was first released at 1997 by Amigo-Spiele. Then it becomes the biggest small-box cardgame family.
(Here, I write about the Amigo edition)

In Bohnanza, players are planting, harvesting beans, or trade it.
Therefore, there are 6 types of beans in he box:
6 pieces of Garden beans,
6 pieces of Red Beans,
10 pieces of Soya Beans,
14 pieces of Green Beans,
16 pieces of Stink Beans,
18 Pieces of Chili Beans,
20 Pieces of Blue Beans.

The heart of the mechanism is the trading: players can change their cards if they want. This is very similar to the mechanism of "The Settlers of Catan". And this mechanism brings fun to both two games.

In the game, every player have 2 bean fields in front of him. These are only "virtual" bean fields, in Amigo edition there are no cards representing them. In the bean fields, players planting beans.
In every field, there must be only one kind of beans at the same time.
At the beginning everybody get 5 beancards to his hand. It is forbidden to change the order of the cards.
The active player has 4 things to do, in the following order:
1.) He must play 1 card from his hand, to one of his bean fields. If he want, he may play one other. If there is no room for the bean he has to play out, he must harvest the beans from one of him fields.
2.)Draw 2 cards, and put it into the middle of the table, face up.
If he want these (or one of these) cards, he can immediatly plant it to his fields.
But, if he does not want these beans, he may offer it to the others. It often happens, that one of the others collecting that beans in her field. Then, the other one offer one of her cards in her hand.
The active player may give these cards as gift to anybody. It can be accepted or rejected.
3.) The active player must plant the beans (either what he drew, or what he got during the trading) to his fields.
4.) Draw 3 new beancards.

When a player harvest his field, he got golds according to the amount and the type of the beans he harvested.

Well, it seems to be difficult. But it isn't. After playing once, or twice, you will find it easy, and very fun.

Briefly about the expansions:
1.)Bohnanza Erweiterungsset: First expansion, released by Look-out, and then Amigo spiele. This contains 3 new bean types, allowing 5-7th player (Note: Rio Grande edition of the base game contains these types of beans). The Amigo revised edition contains exercise cards. Satisfing these cards, players can earn more golds.
2.)La Isla Bohnita: This is analogous to the Seafahrer expansion of Catan. Here, the players have a ship, and can bring beans from La Isla Bohnita. Pirate ship can be bought to steal beans from the others ships.
3.) High Bohn: Look-out, Amigo, and Rio Grande published these expansion as well. In this expansion players can buy buildings using their golds. Each building has an identical feature, which makes easier the life of the bean traders.
4.)Bohnaparte, Dschingis Bohn: These 2 expansion are not the same, but has a very similar mechanism (Note, the Amigo's Bohnaparte contains both expansion).
In this expansion, the player conquers the "Bohnen Land". Player fights with each other in order to conquer part of a land eg.: city, village, mines etc. Player with greatest "empire", win.
5.) Mutabohn: In this expansion players can mutate their bohnes:
In the bohnfields there can be several types of beans planted.
6.) Telebohn: Here, players can change their beanfields.
7.) Bohnröschen: A fairy tale themed expansion. Each players have a "Beanple". They are hurrying to wake up the sleeping Bohnröschen,
doing loads of challenge.
8.) Auf der schwäb'schen Eisenbohn: The bean train goes to 5 different schwabian city. In each city, beans have different rate, when a player want to sell it.
9.) Bohnedikt: The Sacreficed expansion. This this the newest expansion, I do not know the details.

Stand alone variants:
1.)Ladybohn: There are male, female and child beans. When female bean is in the top of the beanfield, it earns more gold.
2.)Al Cabohne: This a 1-2 player variant. Player have to beat the beanmaffia. They need to pay taxes to the maffia. In this game, the trading mechanism is missing.
3.)Bohnkick: Beans like football as well! This game simulates a football match.
4.) Space beans: Here, everyone has a public, and a secret beanfield. Beans in the secret beanfield are hidden from the others.
Trading is missing here as well.

Oh, sorry, I've forgotten the most important thing.
Yes, this my favourite game. I like the trading mechanism, changing cards, etc.
Personally I like games, that desire direct interactions from the players.

But I think, the expansions are not as good as the base game. There are one or two that is OK, but usually too difficult or contains nothing new.
