Subject: Board game Similar to Chaos in the Old World rss

Purchased Chaos in the Old World few months ago and have been playing it quite actively with my friends - now I would need some new board game to fresh things up.

I'm still looking for something similar to Chaos in the Old World. Where you take the role of some faction or group and try to triumph over other players. War based where you control troops on a board sounds good, but it can have other mechanics like building or diplomatics as well.

Theme can range from middle age to futuristic, however I'm not really into sci-fi stuff. Play time should be from one hour to maximum of four hours. The game size, complexity and price don't really matter as long as they fit the description.

Thanks for the possible replies - I'm going to check them all out.

Runewars or A Game of Thrones (first edition) for the longer end...

Word of Warning... I love Chaos in the Old World, but despise A Game of Thrones. Chaos, doesn't have the whole alliance bit and seems more ambiguous as to who is winning. In contrast I've played games of A Game of Thrones where I have been relegated to token participant (in a three hour game) on turn two.

I'm also interested in the answer because I love Chaos. Small World doesn't scratch the same itch for me, though I do like it. Haven't tried Runewars yet.

I've not played it yet, but I also think Runewars is what you're looking for.

If you're heavy into the theme tie-in, maybe try something like...

Shogun. It's an euro game too. You'll love it. No diplomacy though but the game is very very competitive.

It has got strategy, tactics, battles, buildings(economics).
I love it. It's like chess but waaaay more fun

I second A game of Thrones. Although it's quite different from Chaos in the Old World, it does match the criteria you mention. Also, it's a fantastic game, full of tension, shifts in power, alliances and backstabbing.

Starcraft, though I guess there's a chance it might be too long.

Very good game, but also very long. Last time we quit after 12 hours, before the game was finished... Could play much shorter, but 4 hours is unlikely.

Although out of print, and best with a full complement of six, the science fiction game (sorry) Dune really needs to be mentioned.

Haven't played any of the following but was considering when searching for lighter agressive game (bought CitOW in the end):

Nexus Ops (OOP, but definetly the genre you're after ), Small World (don't like that you play 2-4 factions throughout the game), Viktory II (think Risk on Settlers board)

for area control check: Shogun, The End of the Triumvirate (3 player), Mission: Red Planet (for more wacky area control)

Heavier (3-4 hours): Friedrich (3-4 player),Maria (2-3 player), Twilight Imperium (Third Edition) (8 hours...), Imperial (2 hours, more negotiation and economy, but also combat), Mare Nostrum + expansion Mare Nostrum: Mythology Expansion (6 player game), plus everything else the others said (warrior knights, Runewars, Starcraft). Basically check FFG catalogue.
