Titan Dice in Kickstarter - September 19th!

I've been working on an abstract game and am not finding a theme that fits perfectly. The current theme is a mosh pit at a rock concert where each player has different character tiles that they need to link to each other. The characters are: Ninja, Pirate, Monkey, Zombie, and Alien.

I've been trying to think of what to call all these characters collectively. I lean toward Internet memes, but that conjures images of Tay Zonday, Numa Numa, and viral videos. What are these dudes called? Should I come up with something completely new?

They are geeky, what about Geekies?

With the Internet meme thing, what about Memies?

The mosh pit theme is somewhat random, but it fits the mechanics in a way. The dudes aren't really fighting in an Ultimate Showdown kinda of way, they are trying to link up in a Voltron kinda of way and are trying to meet up with their buddies in the pit. At this point, the characters and mechanics are pretty solid, but the theme of a mosh pit is not sticking 100% I thought about a costume party, where the characters are dressed up, but that doesn't explain the different abilities. (e.g. the Alien uses a tractor beam to summon other tiles to it) Any ideas? (bonus points for somehow adding bacon to the theme without making it too random, good luck with that one... mmmm bacon)

The next question is, should the Alien be a Robot instead?

Poll
Which character should be used?
Alien
Robot
Other

Robot, definitely robot.

Add bacon to one of the pirate tiles or you can see inside the zombies stomach cavity and there is a perfect strip of bacon bacon

Lots of votes for Robot (relatively), but there are also a lot for "other." Unfortunately, I don't see any comments as to what the other character might be....

Suddenly a shot rang out! A door slammed. The maid screamed. Suddenly a pirate ship appeared on the horizon! While millions of people were starving, the king lived in luxury. Meanwhile, on a small farm in Kansas, a boy was growing up.

My "other" [had I voted] would be to leave out Monkey and include both Alien and Robot. ninjaarrrhgoozombierobot

And have them be real incarnations of said geek archetypes that have unwittingly invaded a geek-con filled with "muggles" in costumes [non-player or the other players' characters] that they must successfully navigate in order to link back up with their "real" fellow weirdos.

Like on Galaxy Quest when the real aliens show up at the GalaxyQuestCon and everyone goes "Good costumes!"

That would be cool, but there would be trademark issues. However, I agree with your point about Blanka

My immediate thought after reading your post was 'the mob': different crime bosses using different methods of operation and control to rise to, as well as exert, their authority and potential.

"Ninja" could be a cautious boss that stays out of the law's way while conducting his business (somewhat) effectively without alerting the authorities.

"Pirate" could be a boss which prefers to take over others' illegal operations rather than to create new disturbances in society which would arrouse suspicion as well as require extra creativity/planning.

"Monkey" could be a somewhat random boss which takes afvantage of any good opportunity presenting itself, albeit with comparatively limited economic prosperity.

"Zombie" could be a boss which either improves upon failed illegal endeavors or takes over the projects of players which have been elimintated from the game or both.

"Alien" could be a boss that does things truely on their own, coming up with unique plans for success (either on their own or specified by the rules) which may provide greater, though perhaps comparably unlikely, opportunity for success.

This general idea could also be used toward any game in which players use different methods of operation to attempt economic success; such as an industry game including capitalism, socialism, communism etc. if you want to get political/societal about it.

Thanks for the ideas! Those roles might be good for another game, but they may be a little deeper than what is needed here. For this one though, the mechanics of the roles are already set, (e.g. the robot/alien uses a tractor beam to pull other tiles to it) but the theme and characters could be changed.

Here is another thread with some voting options:

The "alien" mob boss could have a "magnetic" personality which draws people to him but it seems like the two ideas might not be jiving right. A mob theme sounds a little more subdued than what you're going for anyway
