How is the solo play? Is it varied enough to for long time play?

With the DYO features solo play is varied enough. Even losing is fun!

I agree, Frontline has a terrific AI for solo play, a truly unexpected benefit of this game.

This might seem a weird question, but how is play time and space footprint for a solo game? Is this something I could carry round the house, whip out on pretty much any surface - my lap, say - setup, play and tear down in 30 minutes?

No, you need a bigger surface area than your lap. A standard card table or dining room table would be enough though.
